I am a Clinical Psychologist with fifteen years of experience in treatment and assessment. Education in both the Arts and Science inform my balanced approach to improving mental health. I place importance on understanding the client as a unique individual with their own stressors, life experiences, key relationships and biological/health characteristics. This understanding helps me to develop a focused and effective treatment strategy designed to increase happiness and improve quality of life. I rely on evidence-based techniques, but also understand the importance building of a strong therapeutic relationship based on trust.

, How can my partner and I communicate better? Or they have questions about identity formation and their future: Who am I?; What should I do with my life? Other questions are often about sexuality or grief or how to find ways through the current difficulties in their lives.
I work with younger and mid-life adults and couples, many of whom are experiencing difficulty with relationships, identity, anxiety, and depression. Other areas of concern might be spirituality or sexual orientation, or life direction. Quite often, people I meet with are employed in creative fields: art, music, film, tech, or jobs in social justice work. To get a sense of who I am, how I practice, and to access my contact info--check out my website or Instagram "byshariallen".

My specialities include complex post traumatic stress disorder, childhood neglect/abuse, attachment issues, sex and love addictions, dissociative tendencies, and couples and family counselling.
I draw from a range approaches depending upon your needs and preferences. Among them are cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal neurobiological ideas, family systems therapy, and attachment theory. It is common for clients to arrive with issues identified only to discover that there are other deeper and more fundamental issues which underlie them. I work at a pace compatible with your ability to integrate change. I am gentle and encouraging, but firm and forthright. I provide a free initial consultation so you can determine whether you feel comfortable with me. My aim is for you to feel welcome, safe and comfortably challenged.

I truly admire the courage it takes to admit you need support and begin making changes in your relationship.
Relationships often attract us with their promise of heaven, but can quickly end up feeling like hell. Emotional distance, loneliness, escalating fights, affairs, and addictions may leave you wondering what happened to the bright future you once envisioned with your partner. If this sounds like your marriage or relationship, know that you can come back from the brink. Relationship troubles can be confusing and stressful, but couples counselling can help you and your partner heal from past emotional injuries, rebuild a sense of closeness, and kick start communication on gridlocked issues.

Couples Counselling
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
