I specialize in coping skills for stress, emotion overwhelm, trauma, PTSD, anger management, life transitions, self-esteem, spirituality, relationship and men's issues.
On the outside, things might look fine. You get through the day, get things done. But inside? It’s a different story. Maybe you’ve noticed you’ve been reacting more strongly lately, getting upset over things that wouldn’t normally bother you. Or pulling away without meaning to, feeling distant even when you’re with the people you care about. You might not always be sure what you’re feeling, only that it can feel heavy or overwhelming at times, leaving you frustrated, disconnected, or shut down. You’re not alone in this. A lot of people were never shown the tools to handle what’s going on beneath the surface .

I work with adults, youth, children, and families. I use a strength-based approach to address concerns, and draw on the theories of narrative, response-based, cognitive behavioural and emotion focused therapy in my work. I also specialize in EMDR, an evidence-based trauma-processing therapy. I also employ arts-based approaches, incorporating music and visual arts, especially when working with children and youth. My practice addresses the adversities of life, our transitions, our mental health, our mental challenges and those unexpected adversities that set us back. I have been working in the field for over forty years as a psychotherapist, researcher and instructor of those working in the mental health field. I have spent a great deal of time in Africa working to mitigate the trauma of war on children, youth and families. I utilize a Resilience Framework to assess and address the presenting challenges. If you want more information my book; More than Luck Cultivating a Resilient Mindset-Navigating life and Adversity, might be helpful.

I offer you a respectful, private, and confidential place to find engagement, clarity, reassurance, compassion, challenge, insight, support, hope, acceptance, and calm. These are empirically supported elements of a therapeutic relationship. Conflict, confusion, distress, and suffering can be eased. Your relationships with others, the past, your future, and with yourself can bring you satisfaction! I work best with people who want to re-frame their experiences and find new ways of engaging with life. It is helpful when people are open to gentle invitations to reflect, and have a genuine curiosity about their experiences.

I know how difficult it can feel to be human some days. When painful thoughts and emotions take over- it can feel impossible to find a way forward. You get stuck fighting with and blaming yourself for feeling this way. Relationships can suffer, and it's hard to connect with what really matters. You don't have to do this alone —and humans aren't made to. It takes courage to seek support. As painful as these feelings might be, with the right support and guidance, they can also become a doorway to personal growth. Together, we'll slow down, tend to what feels heavy, and find what is needed for deeper healing.

How long does therapy take for anger management?

Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?

Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?

Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
