Psychotherapy: Tending to the Soul Our pain and "symptoms" (depression, anxiety, grief) are often expressions of our unmet, sometimes unconscious longings. Turning toward our experience with compassion can offer insight into what we are needing. I encourage folks to share what is on their hearts and to notice what comes up when that sharing is held in a safe, nonjudgmental container. We'll often turn to the body to check in, notice where emotion is moving or stuck, where trauma or intuition are being held. So much can move and shift when we have a trusted and confidential place to process our experiences and to speak our truths.

Sometimes, all we need is someone to listen. I work with clients who feel like they need a compassionate, empathetic ear to listen to whatever they wish to work through. I strongly believe that everyone has the power, strength and agency to work through life's challenges and I'll make sure you feel like that while simultaneously helping you build your resilience and "coping skills toolkit" or simply giving you the space to talk and feel seen and heard.

Does it seem like even though you try so hard, you just can't feel confident and happy? You're exhausted. You overthink. You criticize yourself. You should have figured things out by now, but you feel stuck and it's not for lack of trying. In your life this can look like anxiety, lack of motivation, procrastinating, impostor syndrome, over-eating, low self-esteem, unsatisfying relationships, a discouraging job or even depression, and feeling like you’re not enjoying life and don’t know what to do anymore. I know these feelings too and how exhausting it feels and I want to let you in on a little secret. This is not your fault.

I work with teens and adults who are exploring self-identity: career shifts, changes in relationships, low self-esteem, changes in locations, and experienced trauma/generational trauma.
I am a certified professional art therapist living in the Westshore area of Victoria. I work with clients who are family caregivers and have experienced burnout, compassion fatigue, and anticipatory grief. I also work with clients who are wanting to explore their identity where a safe space is needed in looking at who they are, feeling their emotions authentically, working with life transitions, boundaries, and feeling 'stuck', and exploring intergenerational traumas.

Something brought you here, and it probably wasn't easy to take this step. Maybe anxiety has been your unwelcome companion for too long, or your past keeps interrupting your present in ways that leave you feeling helpless. Perhaps you find yourself repeating relationship patterns that leave you feeling unseen or misunderstood. These experiences have taught you to be hypervigilant, to always be "on," but your nervous system is tired. You're ready to learn what it feels like to genuinely relax, to trust, to show up as yourself without fear. You deserve relationships and a life that nourish rather than drain you.

My career has allowed me to work with a wide variety of clients, including couples, families, teens and children.
In over thirty years working as a psychologist, I have become convinced that the most effective way to help others is through a collaborative approach. When the client and therapist work together to find solutions, the emphasis is placed on the client’s individual perspective and the strengths and successes they have already achieved. At the core of therapy, I believe, is a non-judgemental and compassionate view of how everyone’s personal journey involves overcoming suffering and moving towards self-acceptance, empowerment and emotional well- being. I also provide Supervision for therapists.

I have over 15 years of experience, working with children, youth and families in various supportive roles.
I work with individuals navigating a range of challenges. It’s about learning to understand and befriend our own nervous system—seeing how it shapes our feelings, thoughts, and actions. By paying attention to the connection between the body and mind, we can build a stronger sense of safety, confidence, and flexibility. This kind of awareness helps you know yourself better, handle emotions with more ease, and create healthier relationships.

Teen Counsellors

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
