Imagine feeling it in your bones that change is possible. How you relate to yourself, others, and life - can change. I want to work with people who are courageous and fearful and unsure. When we have limiting stories of ourselves it can be helpful to have someone else, a professional, hear us - see us- and want to show another way. I will not look away from your shadow, and I do not fear trauma or big emotions. You are so much more than what you've done, your body, and your worst thoughts.

I have a Bachelor and Master's Degree in Social Work from UBC and over 20 years experience helping others with mental health, addictions, and relationship issues in a variety of health care, community and social service settings. When you come in for counselling support, I start by creating a relaxed atmosphere where you feel safe and reassured that you've found someone who can help you truly face the issues you're experiencing. Sometimes, the stress of life can be overwhelming and your world becomes very narrow.

I support clients from diverse backgrounds with a range of experiences and difficulties. Many of my clients experience symptoms related to ADHD, anxiety, depression, OCD, disordered eating, ASD, and relationship difficulties. My clients come from a variety of cultural backgrounds, diverse sexual and gender identities and many identify as neuro-diverse. Counselling is an excellent way to develop additional coping tools to manage challenges, understand ourselves and cope with different symptoms better, improve relationships, communication and boundaries, and ultimately work towards making positive changes in our lives.

I believe that the experiences we have in our inner and outer world teach us something about the world, ourselves, and others; and they contribute to the forming of often unconscious patterns in the way we think, feel, and act. These experiences can even be stored in the body/nervous system, otherwise known as trauma. In other words, our experiences help create a “map” that show us how to navigate uncertainty, relationships with others, and relationships with our selves. I believe that people come to therapy when those 'maps' are no longer working and need updating. That's where I come in!

I believe that each of us has within ourselves the ability to make positive changes and one of the most fulfilling parts of my career, from nursing to counselling, has been to see people realize their own ability to grow from adversity. I offer a safe and genuine space that we can use together to work through struggles. Coming from a background in psychiatric nursing, I have learned that a genuine and trusting relationship is key to someone feeling heard and understood, and that a solid relationship is the foundation for growth and change.

I have worked with many vulnerable populations including people experiencing homelessness, concurrent mental health disorders, active addiction, job loss, intimate partner violence, and child abuse. My approach to counselling is always compassionate, non-judgemental, collaborative, and anti-oppressive. During our time together, I will pull from various counselling modalities including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), solutions-based therapy and mindfulness-based therapy, depending on what works best for you.

Stress or anxiety can get a fierce grip on life, confusing the future and distancing us from relationships. I help men and women break free from the storm of stressed and anxious thinking. There are real and powerful tools to help us step back and recover our ability to feel focused and hopeful again. I work with understanding and acceptance because painful experiences and family history have affected us all, and each person's journey is unique and deserving of understanding.

Life is not always easy. On our paths, we can come across seemingly insurmountable challenges and dark times that appear endless. During these times, one of the toughest challenges is to reach out for help. The truth is, as social beings, humans were never meant to face life's trials and tribulations alone; it is in relationship with others that we are able to uncover our greatest strengths and discover our inner courage. I hope to help you do just that. You are more than you know. The fact that you are here attests to your bravery in taking the next step forward.

I have a passion for working with individuals who are struggling to stay on top of their emotional responses. This can be due to so many factors from the state of our world, the result of high anxiety, an overactive stress response, trauma and post traumatic stress disorder, conflict in relationships, or burnout. We all experience times when our usual coping strategies are no longer enough and we are in distress. Our relationships suffer, our work suffers and our families suffer.

Men’s mental health is in crisis – a silent crisis. The impact of this on men and those around them cannot be ignored. The world needs men to be able to carry the great weight and pressure of their many responsibilities, without suffering in silence. Typically, not having more than a handful of close friends, and generally used to powering through (or ignoring) their challenges, few men reach out for help. Stigma and shame often prevent men from talking with other men. Therefore preventing the exchange of ideas and solutions or the benefits that come from relationships.

If you've passed the point of trying to merely alleviate symptoms and want to address the root causes of your struggle, I am a therapist that is ready and able to help you do that. I provide a stable and supportive environment that enables you to “go there” in safety, and I consistently provide opportunities and encouragement for you to do so. My clients find me to be highly insightful, effective in the use of analogies and metaphor to increase self-awareness and self-understanding, empathetic, and easy to be vulnerable with. I am non-judgmental, and possess the ability to both meet people where they’re at and to help them shift.

Hello, I'm Niki, very nice to meet you. Chances are you are noticing that some things in your life just aren't working anymore. There are some life events that impact our emotional well-being. Sometimes they are easier to overcome than others. Those that are not easily managed can lead to prolonged mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety, addiction, and others. In therapy, I can help you to work through the process of healing. I have a genuine and compassionate approach that I bring to each session. I hope to help you find emotional health.

How can I find a therapist in Vernon?
Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the United States and Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
