This might include managing depression and anxiety, minimizing substance use, improving relationships with others and self, navigating life transitions and challenges, creating a more enjoyable and fulfilling life, and/or coping with stressors of all kinds.
Having worked in the addictions and mental health field for over the last decade, I have learned that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to therapy. How I approach our work together will depend on your individual needs and desires, as I draw from evidence-based practices to help meet your goals.

I have volunteered and worked with crisis lines, sexual assault centres, universities, youth mandated substance use treatment, and now in private practice.
I enjoy helping clients who are working towards (re)discovering their authentic selves. Often this means working with clients who have/are experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma, body image struggles, substance misuse, and/or ADHD. I have experience working with youth and adults of all different identities.

I support those who are seeking not only to better understand their underlying patterns but also to actively improve their quality of life with a safe, supportive and collaborative counselling relationship. Issues that I help with include healing from traumatic loss, recovering from the effects of childhood trauma, relationship abuse, and other difficult life events. I also work extensively with issues around emotional regulation, boundary setting, anxiety, depression and substance misuse. Even when your struggles originate from severe adversity and trauma, you can grow, not only despite adversity, but because of it.

I typically see people are looking at unpacking the impacts of childhood trauma or recent traumatic/disturbing event(s), impacts of working in community mental health or front line healthcare, and people who are making sense of growing up in families where they were affected by family member's mental health and substance use issues.
Do you feel hooked by painful thoughts, emotions, and behaviours that pull you away from the person you want to be? Work with me to explore how to live life with meaning, to move on from the past and build skills to cope with today.

I'm Conlan Mansfield, a clinical counsellor in Vancouver offering steady, thoughtful support for people who carry a lot beneath a composed exterior — including those navigating substance use, recovery, or the exhaustion of holding things together for a long time.
My approach is grounded, collaborative, and practical. We focus on what’s happening for you now, identify the life you want to move toward, and build from the strengths already present in your experience.
I don’t diagnose or pathologize; instead, we explore clarity, direction, and small, shifts that make a real difference in your day-to-day life.

I have over 10 years experience in supporting those struggling with mental health and substance use issues in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver.
Most of us reach points in our lives where we feel stuck or lost. I believe counselling offers a unique and powerful opportunity to turn inward, to gain a clearer understanding of ourselves and our challenges, to gather wisdom for a new path forward.
I work with clients on a range of issues including: processing past trauma, problematic drug/alcohol use, emotion regulation (e.g. BPD) executive functioning related to attention (e.g. ADHD) and procrastination, as well as existential issues of life meaning, vocation and values, and processing transformations in identity.

I work with addiction and substance use in the context of people's lives and relationships, not as isolated problems.
There's a point where coping turns into surviving, when the chaos of life requires so much that exhaustion becomes the price of admission. Whatever happened to you, something covered the authentic you. Let's find it. After years of being responsible, staying functional, and showing everyone else you're fine, it's cost you your connection with yourself. If pushing through and numbing out are the only ways you've found to get by, that doesn't sound like failure. It sounds like survival. A response to constant demands for performance with very little care in return.

Whether you're dealing with relationship issues, struggling with substance use, or seeking help for a mental health concern, I am here to support you with therapy and counselling.
The people I work with are creative, caring individuals who feel stuck or out of sync with their desired path. Sometimes they feel disengaged from what is important to them. They are motivated for change and open to trying new approaches, seeking a compassionate, understanding therapist to help them navigate their challenges. I aim to empower clients to achieve their goals and align their lives with their core values.

I have a Masters in Social Work from UBC and advanced clinical training in trauma and mental health; including EMDR, CBT-PTSD Joint (for couples), perinatal mental health and substance use.
Grief / Loss and Trauma leave us feeling completely overwhelmed, anxious, feeling like no one else can understand what we are going through and often utterly alone. Sometimes just trying to get through the day feels impossible and we can't even think straight. Sometimes we know that our behaviours today are linked to the terrible thing that has happened but we aren't sure what to do about it. I see individuals who are looking for relief. They are looking for someone to help support them as they regain their footing, develop strategies to manage the anxiety and reprocess the loss and trauma they have experienced in a safe way.

I have spent the past 20 years in Vancouver as a therapist working with children, youth, families and adults struggling with mental health issues, substance use, trauma, anger, grief, as well as isolation and disconnection.
I have always found meaning in connecting with and supporting others. At times, finding similar thoughts and opinions has helped me feel more human; other times, being introduced to different ideas and people has helped open my mind to new possibilities and opportunities. I try to bring that connectedness to my work.

Substance Use Counsellors
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counsellors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
