Often, the narratives we hold about ourselves were written by past traumas, chronic stress, or a world that doesn’t quite understand how our minds work. At Grounded Practice, I provide a safe, neuro-affirming space to examine those stories. I specialize in helping adults navigate anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, and addiction. Whether you are moving through a difficult life transition, exploring your identity, or navigating relationship struggles, you don't have to do this alone. Together, we will unearth deep-rooted patterns and build a life that feels authentic to you.

I specialize in working with young adults, helping clients overcome barriers and reach their goals through a direct, authentic approach that prioritizes collaboration and building a relationship. I work with clients navigating Anxiety, ADHD, Autism, Grief, Trauma, and other challenges. As a child of Soviet immigrants, I also speak Russian fluently. While I grew up in Canada and speak Russian with an accent, it does allow me to connect with clients who feel more comfortable in the language. It also allows me to better understand some of the challenges faced by newcomers in our community.

For over a decade, I’ve worked in the mental health and addictions field, supporting first responders, healthcare workers, and other high-functioning individuals through trauma, depression, anxiety and other challenges. I’ve sat with people who were trained to stay calm in chaos, and who quietly wondered when it became so hard to feel okay in everyday life.
Why Survive to Thrive?
Because surviving is something you’ve already mastered. Thriving is the part that deserves your attention now. My role isn’t to “fix” you, it’s to help you reconnect with yourself in ways that feel practical, respectful, and sustainable.

You may be here because something in your life has fallen apart—or because you’re carrying more than you can manage on your own. A relationship may have shifted, anxiety may have taken over, or you may feel defeated, alone, or unsure how to move forward.
When something painful happens, it can bring long-held beliefs to the surface—about who you are, what you can expect from others, or how safe the world feels. Becoming aware of these patterns can open the door to greater clarity and self-understanding. In working with me, I offer a safe, compassionate space to explore these patterns and support meaningful healing and change.

I grew up in a culture where mental health was often overlooked and surrounded by stigma. That experience shaped my passion for counselling and my commitment to creating a space where people feel heard, understood, and supported. I believe therapy should be a place for healing, growth, connection, and self-discovery, and I welcome individuals from all walks of life who are seeking support.

Dr. Cheryl Bucar Having experienced personal and work related loss, I have learned that recovery from the trauma of loss and change is a process. In many situations such as a death or divorce the individual is able to label the loss and associated feelings as grief. Often in an organizational context, individuals do not think that the work related change as loss which can trigger profound feelings of grief. Understanding organizational loss in this context, normalizing the feelings that go with this type of change allows the integration of this knowing into my group and individual counselling work.

Most of us reach points in our lives where we feel stuck or lost. I believe counselling offers a unique and powerful opportunity to turn inward, to gain a clearer understanding of ourselves and our challenges, to gather wisdom for a new path forward.
I work with clients on a range of issues including: processing past trauma, problematic drug/alcohol use, emotion regulation (e.g. BPD) executive functioning related to attention (e.g. ADHD) and procrastination, as well as existential issues of life meaning, vocation and values, and processing transformations in identity.

You find yourself stuck with thoughts, feelings, or behaviours that weigh you down and isolate you from loved ones. Maybe you're in the midst of crisis and you need someone to listen and support you. I'm convinced (based on good evidence) that it's possible to change how we live and relate to the world around us. We can ask new questions, think new thoughts, embrace our emotions, challenge our beliefs, and heal from trauma. I can help you identify where you're at, what you need, and then work with you to achieve your goals through an approach that is relational, creative, and collaborative.
