Reaching out for help with a problem can be very intimidating! It may help you to know that our work together will always be based upon YOUR values and goals and a shared understanding of the problem. I use cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness-based methods to help people who struggle with unpleasant feelings, problem behaviors, or under-functioning. I'm a huge fan of ACT Therapy, which helps you to notice and disentangle from unhelpful thoughts, notice and accept diffiuclt feelings, orient to the present moment and commit to actions that move you towards what you want in life - towards your values!

At Positive Kids, we understand how difficult it can be to see your child struggle. That’s why we’ve created a nurturing space to help children and teens develop critical life skills, in the following areas: self-control, self-awareness, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making. Therapy can be exciting but also a challenging step for many of us. Sometimes we feel unheard or misunderstood, so we give up on working through those issues. Other times our experiences may seem too painful or impossible to deal with, so we continue to ignore or push problem away. We all need support during difficult times. My practice focuses on creating an authentic therapeutic environment to help you through these challenges. Having someone working with you through difficult times can be life changing. I hope you will reach out if you are needing that support and continue on the journey of self-care and healing.

I work alongside people seeking support through a period of emotional overwhelm, transition, or self-discovery. Whether navigating anxiety, relationship difficulties, low mood, identity concerns, or the lingering effects of trauma, clients are motivated to better understand themselves and live with greater alignment. You may feel stuck or disconnected, yet carry a deep desire for change. I work collaboratively to explore their inner world, honour their lived experience, and support growth by uncovering inherent strengths, creating space for insight, healing, and meaningful action.

While I work with broad conditions (e.g., depression, anxiety), I provide more focused, evidence-based care across three areas: sexual health and relationships, trauma, and child and adolescent assessment. In my work with adults/couples, I support clients navigating concerns related to sexual functioning, desire, intimacy, and communication. This includes issues such as erectile difficulties, performance anxiety, sexual pain, and medical or psychological factors that impact sexual functioning. Treatment is practical, with an emphasis on improving confidence, reducing anxiety, and strengthening connection within relationships.

Support for big feelings, behaviour changes, anxiety, neurodiversity, and life’s hard stuff. I work with children, teens, young adults, and parents. You might be a parent trying to support your child, a teen who feels overwhelmed or shut down, or a young adult navigating identity, relationships, or what comes next. Many people I see feel stuck or unsure where to start. We make space to understand what’s going on underneath, while also building tools you can actually use day to day.

How effective is treatment for learning disabilities?
When initiated early and tailored to a child’s specific needs, learning disability treatment can be quite effective at helping a child cope with their disability, though its exact efficacy may depend on the severity of symptoms and whether comorbid disorders exist. Less is known about treatment initiated in adulthood, but it is certainly possible that an adult with a learning disability will see some improvement—or at the very least, identify workarounds and accommodations that could make symptoms less burdensome in day-to-day life.

When should someone seek treatment for learning disabilities?
It’s best to seek treatment as early as possible. Because learning disabilities often go unnoticed until a child starts school, or even until they’re a few years along, regular check-ins with teachers and doctors can help parents determine whether children are meeting milestones and keeping up with peers or whether an evaluation for learning disabilities may be warranted. And although earlier is always better, it’s never too late to be evaluated for learning disabilities and to seek treatment.

What happens if learning disabilities are left untreated?
Undiagnosed and untreated learning disabilities can be a source of significant frustration and shame for a child, who may feel that their challenges stem from a lack of intelligence or willpower. Such feelings can trigger low self-esteem, depression, or anxiety, which may push a child toward risky behaviors, including substance use. In adulthood, untreated learning disabilities can interfere with career success, and lingering feelings of self-doubt and shame can negatively affect someone’s mental health.

Are there medications for learning disabilities?
Currently, there are no medications designed to treat specific learning disabilities such as dysgraphia or dyscalculia. However, someone with a learning disability may be prescribed medication for a comorbid condition, such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD, which may have positive downstream effects on their learning disability; for example, a child with both ADHD and dyslexia may find that they’re better able to focus on their reading exercises after being prescribed a stimulant medication.
