Hi there, my name is Maryam, and I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC). My goal is to provide you a safe space to express how you’re feeling. I am a first-generation South-Asian settler living, working, and playing, on the sacred, stolen, and ancestral territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. I identify as a third-culture kid and know how difficult it can be to feel like you belong, especially while struggling with the multiple pressures of our communities or families.

Are you feeling disconnected from those around you? You might find yourself stuck in the same arguments or patterns with your partner. Or you may be struggling to find a sense of belonging in your
family
, workplace, or a new community. This sense of isolation can magnify already stressful situations and have negative impacts on both your emotional and physical health. With support, you can experience the growth and healing that can come from reconnecting with yourself, and strengthening your relationship with others. My identities and experiences have shaped me to become the counselor I am today, a wounded healer.

Relationship issues? Fear? I work with clients like you and want you to know you are not alone in these feelings. You deserve a safe space to talk about what you’re experiencing and express how it makes you you feel.

Most of my clients have personal issues, like stress, anxiety or depression but, at the same time, these issues often affect relationships in their

, workplace or social circle.
Do you feel stressed or anxious in your life or overwhelmed in your daily struggles; or feel stuck and depressed? It's known connecting well with a therapist is an important factor for success, so I spend more than one hour at first sessions, at reduced rate, or you can come for 15 minutes without charge. This creates good initial rapport and a better understanding of your problems. I'm well trained & experienced to help you deal with your problem. I work with individuals using cognitive therapy mixed with common sense from my life experience as a wife and mother.

You're struggling, stressed out, exhausted, and don't know what to do. Your friends and
family
mean well, but they don't get how hard this is for you or how bad you feel. Trying to be "positive" or "grateful" doesn't help you with things like kids' challenging behaviour,
family
conflict, relationship troubles, childhood trauma, a broken heart, loneliness, or feeling bad about yourself. It's making you irritable, anxious, and depressed. Sometimes you're not even sure how you feel, or how to make sense of what is going on.

I understand it can be difficult to reach out for help, whether you or your loved ones are experiencing substance use issues, anxiety, depression, pornography issues,
family
conflict, or problems with interpersonal relationships.
As a Registered Clinical Counsellor/Psychotherapist with over 20 years of experience working with individuals, couples, and families, I use a client-centred, integrative approach to address the therapeutic goals of clients. No one should be defined by their diagnoses, and rather than placing emphasis on what is not working, I collaborate with clients to determine what actions can be taken to improve on their circumstances. All individuals exist along their own continuum of mental health, and with adequate supports and a focus on holistic well-being, every client can be nurtured towards growth and a healthier sense of self.

What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
