EMDR Therapists in Vancouver, BC
I integrate EMDR, Internal Family Systems, and talk therapy in a way that is paced, thoughtful, and tailored to you.
You may be used to holding a lot on your own. On the outside things can look functional, but internally there may be overthinking, self-doubt, or a sense of disconnection from yourself. Many of the people I work with are neurodivergent, queer, or bicultural, and are navigating the impact of emotionally unavailable or inconsistent relationships. They often come to therapy wanting deeper clarity, healthier boundaries, and more ease in how they relate to themselves and others.

I have helped parents and mothers through their unique journeys of pregnancy, postpartum, and parenting for over a decade as a midwife, and now as a clinical counsellor. Within my counselling practice, I work with people who are somewhere along their reproductive or parenting journeys. I also work with individuals and couples who are at other life stages, such as looking to heal, grieve, and find balance or direction. I am also a counsellor at pregnancy loss and termination clinics in Vancouver, providing decision-making guidance, as well as coping, healing, and trauma support.

My core therapeutic lens is Adlerian psychodynamic therapy, but I also draw upon interventions and tools from other modalities such as trauma-informed approaches, EMDR (eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing), narrative therapy, parts work, emotion focused therapy (EFT), inner child work, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).
I offer individual and couples counselling to neurotypical and neurodistinct clients (e.g. ADHD, autism) to work on issues such as, but not limited to, guilt and shame, anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, trauma, communication skills, grief and loss, and disorganisation. Suffering is an unavoidable part of the human experience. Yet, when you’re immersed in past or present struggles, it’s so natural to feel isolated, stuck, and unsure of how to move forward. The pain can become so overwhelming that it not only interferes with your ability to cope, but it also can rob you of your joy. I view counselling as a nurturing space for appreciating how you’ve supported yourself while also building a deeper sense of freedom, strength, and connection to what matters to you.

I use an integrative approach of person-centered, attachment theory, cognitive behavioral therapy, emotion-focused family therapy, EMDR and DBT depending on the needs of the client.
In the course of our lives, we inevitably encounter challenging periods and we do our best to navigate with the resources that we have. When the pain and distress become too difficult to cope, having a safe space and a trusted therapist to talk to can help. Allow me the privilege of relieving some of the burden, thereby fostering space necessary for personal growth and a hopeful future.

Being a human is hard. Sometimes, the waves of the human experience feel like they’re engulfing us, and we feel swallowed up by sorrow, terror, shame, stress, or confusion. Other times, we may feel so disconnected from ourselves and the world around us that we wonder if a meaningful life is possible. Perhaps there are parts of your mind and heart that are fighting with each other, and you’re wrestling with constant inner turmoil. Or maybe you are tired of repeating the same old patterns and finding yourself in the same place you once were: frustrated and perplexed as to how you can break out of a cycle that is no longer serving you.

Hi there!
I'm a Second-Generation Chinese-Canadian (born and raised in Vancouver), and Registered Clinical Counsellor with my M.A. in Counselling Psychology from UBC. I often work with individuals who are navigating complex emotional challenges where problems vary from being clearly defined (ie. feeling overwhelmed or "stuck"), or unsure of what is exactly "wrong." My approach involves developing a therapeutic relationship where we can work together supported by compassion, non-judgement, and intention. The goal is not to "fix" someone but to support you in developing or adapting strengths to help you progress forward.

Who is EMDR for?
EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.
Why do people need EMDR?
People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.
What problems does EMDR treat?
First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.
What happens in EMDR therapy?
First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimising its ability to trigger anxiety.
