As you go along in life, do you find yourself switching between different moods and hijacked by so many contradictory feelings and impulses that feel out of your control or conscious awareness? You may wish to live life more fully and meaningfully while you find yourself inhibited or limited with struggles between your wish for involvement in ordinary life and fear of leaving the house, mistrust of relationships, or hopelessness about future. In dealing with these personal challenges, you may feel flooded and severely anxious or in trying to disconnect or deny these responses, may feel chronically depressed and alienated from self.

I work well with folks who have long-standing issues, trauma, and/or interpersonal challenges. Some ways this may present are you may have difficulties with being kind to yourself, struggles sustaining meaningful relationships, and/or having confusion about who you are. You may have a diagnosis of depression, anxiety, PTSD or a personality disorder. An integral part of how I approach therapy is the development of a safe and trusting relationship between you and I, where you can feel comfortable to show up as yourself. Together we will explore how you face reality, your intrapsychic world and the experiences that have shaped it.

Being you when the world demands you be someone else takes a toll. This makes it hard to be with the parts of ourselves that we’ve had to hide, or become, in order to survive that. As an autistic transgender system, we feel this deeply. So, I offer what's helped us: a radically accepting, empowering and understanding space where you can freely explore who you are, or want to be, with no judgements or coercion towards changes you don't want. Trauma recovery can be transformative, but choosing your own adventure makes it much more powerful. It's your life, you should get to decide where you want to go with it.

Being in the nexus of something means you are right in the middle of it hence, easy to feel overwhelmed by the multitude of things coming at you. At Nexus, I will work with you within the context of a nonjudgmental, collaborative and healing therapeutic relationship to parse out and clearly see the interwoven links and connections that contribute to how you experience, perceive and interpret life's challenges, difficulties and obstacles. By understanding these connections, we can separate what is important to you and focus on your goal(s) to improve your mental, emotional and spiritual well-being.

Trying to cope with the pressures and stresses of life leaves us anxious, depressed, and disconnected from ourselves and others. Many of us fall into self-sabotaging behaviours or repeat unhealthy relationships. Many of us face the limitations of psychiatric treatment and are forced to carry the weight and stigma of diagnosis. Many of us struggle simply to maintain our creativity and our sense of self against overwhelming pressures to conform or perform. We all need the chance to check in and process our feelings and reactions, to work through the struggles of our personal history, and find new and creative ways to move forward.

You’ve worked hard to keep things together, but inside, it often feels like you’re carrying too much. You may feel anxious, disconnected, or easily overwhelmed by emotions that seem to come out of nowhere. Perhaps you’ve gone through painful experiences that still feel “too close,” no matter how much time has passed. If this sounds familiar, please know returning to safety in your body and life again is possible.

If you are feeling stuck in your past, old ways of coping, or are replaying painful memories I want you to know that there is hope for your future. I work with many people, who, like you, each have unique stories, and have done their best to push forward and to leave their hurts behind. You may be surrounded by people, and yet feel a longing in your life for deeper connection and relationships. You might even feel disconnected from yourself, your body, and others. Perhaps you have tried to cope with the distress by turning to substances, food, self-harm, shopping, work, or other ways of feeling in control.

Do you wonder if you’re the only one around who experiences the world with the intensity you do? Depending on how stressed you are, it may feel like you’re on alert or like you’re living in a soundproof glass box, cut off from others. You may have a hard time focusing on conversations with co-workers and family. You might have been told you’re "oversensitive" or have "no filter.". You may be feeling frustrated with yourself for not being able to get things together and just move forward, but the pandemic has made everything harder, and it feels like there are always too many moving parts. You want for a space to talk this through.

If you’re feeling stuck in painful patterns, weighed down by anxiety, grief, or past trauma, or struggling to connect in your relationships, you’re not broken—you’re human. Many of the people we work with at Lotus Therapy & Counselling Centre feel like they’re carrying emotions too big to hold alone. They’ve spent years trying to push through, make sense of it all, or just "be strong," only to find themselves exhausted, disconnected, or unsure of how to move forward. We go beyond traditional talk therapy to tackle the root causes of your struggles, not just the symptoms.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Counsellors
How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?
Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?
There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?
Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
