You will learn skills to process your grief/losses, anger, hypervigilance, hypertensitivity, flashbacks, nightmares,
fears
,
panic
attacks, depression,
anxiety
and avoidant behaviours.
PTSD or Trauma related to stressful life changes, psychological / emotional / physical childhood abuse, neglect, rejection, abandonment, exploitation, sexual abuse, incest or witnessing family violence could result in experiencing distorted perceptions, emotions, beliefs and meanings about life. Trauma freezes the traumatic experience in the nervous system creating unhelpful thinking, negative self-assessment, and self-defeating / self-sacrificing behaviours. These conditions can affect your capacity to tolerate and adapt to life's ups and downs; to break old patterns that hold you back; to avoid engaging in risky behaviours/situations; and to avoid re-enacting your past traumas over and over.

I work with clients who want to find relief from their struggles with the following: depression,
anxiety
, anger, grief and loss, worthlessness, despair, disordered eating, life/work transitions, addiction (substances, pornography and gambling), and the negative impact of sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, and poverty. Often in the beginning, people come in feeling overwhelmed and frustrated and may be clearer initially of what isn't working for them or what they no longer want in their life. I believe these feelings are a resource to reveal what you do want in your life, what's important to you, your values, hopes, dreams and commitments.

Sometimes it’s hard to notice when things aren't going well. It might be subtle signs that pop up at the end of the day. You feel like the day is going well and you’re keeping busy. But as soon as you have a moment of silence, your mind starts to cycle through things that you just don't want to think about. Do you find it hard to sit still and be at peace in these moments? Do you distract yourself as much as possible just so you don’t listen to your own thoughts? Maybe you have a hard time completing any of your important tasks? These are all normal reactions. Signals that your body is giving you to pay attention to.

Currently taking clients / Clients come to me to me with a desire to reclaim parts of themselves that are buried under trauma,
anxiety
, self-judgement, and perfectionism. They feel as though the fundamental spark at the core of their being is lost, tarnished, and far out of reach. As such, they rightfully long for the fullness of their being and it is a privilege to help them rediscover it.

I understand it can be difficult to reach out for help, whether you or your loved ones are experiencing substance use issues,
anxiety
, depression, pornography issues, family conflict, or problems with interpersonal relationships.
As a Registered Clinical Counsellor/Psychotherapist with 25 years of experience working with individuals, couples, and families, I use a client-centred, integrative approach to address the therapeutic goals of clients. No one should be defined by their diagnoses, and rather than placing emphasis on what is not working, I collaborate with clients to determine what actions can be taken to improve on their circumstances. All individuals exist along their own continuum of mental health, and with adequate supports and a focus on holistic well-being, every client can be nurtured towards growth and a healthier sense of self.

If you’re a woman experiencing
anxiety
and/or depression who often engages in negative self-talk, my open and compassionate way of working with body and mind may be right for you. Your gloom/dread may come from traumatic experiences, and/or it may arise from good experiences that did not happen. The empathy that wasn't demonstrated, a safety that wasn't provided, grief that wasn't attended; developmental experience influences your ability to show up as the person you want to be. Missing out on good experiences, or bearing traumatic experience, can affect your sense of security, it does not, however, stop you from earning security.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
