Do you often feel anxious without a clear cause, find it hard to slow down, feel emotionally overwhelmed or disconnected? These experiences often signal deeper emotions that are hard to access due to unresolved past experiences or trauma. Throughout life, especially in early relationships, we develop strategies to maintain connections and manage anxiety around our emotions. While adaptive, these strategies often become barriers in relationships and to living authentically. By collaboratively uncovering these protective strategies and processing underlying emotions, we can help you move toward a more connected and fulfilling life.

Whatever has brought you here—the weariness of depression, the struggle of addiction, the heaviness of anxiety, the uncertainty of life in its entirety—I welcome you.
I specialize in relationship issues for individuals and couples; addiction and recovery, including harm reduction; and general supportive counselling. These issues might present as toxic relationships, codependency, breakups, suicidal ideation, communication conflicts, and even the little traumas of our everyday lives that can grow to be so overwhelming.

I also specialize in a harm-reduction, non-abstinence approach to alcohol and opiate use, helping clients create healthier relationships with drinking without requiring full sobriety.
I offer counselling that is practical, logical, and focused on real change. While many therapists emphasize endless conversation, my approach goes further. I combine a safe, supportive space with psycho-education on key life topics and strategies you can use right away. Rooted in Adlerian therapy, I help you uncover unhelpful patterns, make sense of your experiences, and build resilience. My goal is not to keep you in therapy forever but to equip you with tools and insights that last a lifetime, so you leave feeling confident, capable, and ready to handle challenges independently.

My therapeutic approach has been influenced by a range of disciplines and anti-oppressive frameworks - however, my practice is most influenced by Narrative Therapy. Narrative therapy invites the therapist and person seeking change to work collaboratively in unpacking unhelpful narratives that are carried and re-authoring our own narratives towards new, helpful changes. Problems often dominate the story of who we are and help us to make unhelpful conclusions about ourselves. In fact, many people report that those problems can completely consume their sense of who they are. From this approach, I hold the stance that ‘you are not the problem, the problem is the problem’ (White, M) and together, we can explore how problems may be dominating your story, working together to re-author it. In my experience I have worked with many individuals, families, and couples renegotiating their relationship to various problems. Contact me today to discuss re-authoring your narrative.

Many of my clients come to therapy seeking a better emotional understanding of themselves and their partners. Maybe you find yourself in the midst of relationship conflict, or a loved one had encouraged you to be more open and vulnerable. Or maybe you find yourself at a crossroads in your career and want clarity before taking the next step. I also love working with couples, especially those navigating the challenges of parenthood, because I know that healing those relationships can have lifelong impacts.

I support people who feel stuck in cycles that don’t seem to change — whether that’s anger, overwhelm, addiction, disconnection, or symptoms of ADHD, depression, anxiety, grief, and trauma-related stress.
People come to me unsure of where to start. They know something isn’t working, but they aren’t looking for quick fixes — they want real change. My focus is on supporting you in slowing down, noticing what’s happening beneath the surface, and beginning to make sense of patterns that have felt unshakable.

Outside of counselling, I work with individuals in the Vancouver Downtown Eastside who are living with addiction and housing insecurity.
I did my Master's in creative arts therapies, with a focus on drama therapy. I have experience in using martial arts and role playing games as a therapeutic tool for youth with learning disabilities and am excited to offer these tools to a wider population. I have also developed an appreciation and familiarity with behavioral therapy tools and practices.

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
