I am shaped by anti-oppressive, feminist, and relational-cultural approaches and work from an integrative approach that also includes somatic approaches.
I work with adults and youth aged 16 and up on issues around trauma, sexuality, identity, and relationships. I also provide queer and trans affirming individual and relationship counselling services for folks in various relationship structures. I specialize in sexualized violence and also work more expansively looking at reclamation of self and identity after trauma of displacement and/or collective and intergenerational trauma, as well as institutional trauma (such as religious trauma). I believe that healing is expansive and I strive to honour and integrate into our work whatever ways of healing you have already been using.

My counselling style is centered around the therapeutic relationship and collaborative goal setting, from a somatic attachment theory, and eye-movement desensitization & reprocessing (EMDR) lens.
Hi, I’m Nicole. I live in the beautiful Sea to Sky corridor & accept online clients throughout BC. I believe that through therapy all people have the opportunity to learn and understand themselves on a deeper level. With this inner exploration one can experience more understanding, self compassion, and open space for more joy in life – starting today. Therapy can support clients to explore personal patterns that may no longer be serving them. Together clients and therapists work to safely let go of those patterns while building supportive resources, discovering new skills, and creating a personalized tool kit to move forward with.

My approach recognizes your resilience, and trusts your strengths through relational, mindfulness, somatic (body non-contact) work.
I go by he/him/his and I work with folks who are in the marginalized group(s) (gay/bi/queer, person of colour... etc.) who experienced discrimination and/or sexual and physical assault who wants to have more options to respond and understand themselves. Folks who feel that they oftentimes react out of proportion to the situation and experienced challenges to trust and build favourable relationships with others. Folks who want to gain some perspectives on their own strengths and resilience. My client demographic so far has only been with men or masculine identifying individuals.

Rooted in social justice and radical acceptance values, her practice is oriented in an Intersectional Feminist-Narrative and trauma-informed framework, and incorporates somatic techniques.
Hiu is experienced in working from an Intersectionality-focused lens with predominantly Black, Indigenous, and folks of colour with different neurotypes, who identify as queer and have ongoing relationships with grief. Trained in Feminist Narrative Therapy, Hiu privileges a person’s survival story and relationships to their agency, emotions, boundaries, and people. Hiu takes on a co-researcher role in therapy sessions with deconstructive conversations, insightful and possibly challenging questions, curiosity, and a commitment to naming the oppressive systems and dominant narratives at work.

I work from an attachment, and somatic lens as your body and brain need time to process the barriers, stress and traumatic histories preventing you from leading the meaningful life you want.
You are asking the big existential questions. Why am I here? Perhaps you keep looking to self-help books and always taking the next seminar or online course - always looking for the answers outside yourself. You want to feel connected to yourself, your loved ones, and the world around you, yet you feel like you don't belong. You feel loss and grief and are searching for purpose but are living with depression and anxiety and questioning your self-worth.

I love working with people who don’t feel they fit into conventional spaces such as those in the LGBTQIA2S community, sex workers, neurospicy folx and those with stigmatized identities such as BPD. My aim as a therapist is to create a safe and non-judgemental environment in which you feel comfortable talking about any thoughts, feelings, or experiences regardless of how embarrassing or shameful you believe them to be, and be met with acceptance, warmth, and respect.

There are times when we just don’t feel like ourselves. For some of us, this means feeling overwhelmed by our thoughts and emotions, while for others the disconnect can come from feeling nothing at all. This internal “ickiness” can show up through our emotions, thoughts, or in our body, and is often a scary, confusing, and unsettling experience. This intuitive feeling is typically caused by misalignment; whether it’s having conflict within ourselves, feeling out of step with those close to us, or feeling out of place in the world around us.

Somatic Counsellors

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
