My counselling style is centered around the therapeutic
relationship
and collaborative goal setting, from a somatic attachment theory, and eye-movement desensitization & reprocessing (EMDR) lens.
Hi, I’m Nicole. I live in the beautiful Sea to Sky corridor & accept online clients throughout BC. I believe that through therapy all people have the opportunity to learn and understand themselves on a deeper level. With this inner exploration one can experience more understanding, self compassion, and open space for more joy in life – starting today. Therapy can support clients to explore personal patterns that may no longer be serving them. Together clients and therapists work to safely let go of those patterns while building supportive resources, discovering new skills, and creating a personalized tool kit to move forward with.

While stress, anxiety, sadness, health problems, and
relationship
conflicts are a common part of life, if they're interfering with work, school, family, relationships, or other areas of your life that are important to you, you may benefit from therapy. My clients experience a range of difficulties from anxiety disorders, OCD, PTSD, depression, substance or impulse control issues, chronic pain or health problems, and high-conflict relationships. The thing they all have in common is they feel like their emotions, behaviours, or past experiences have prevented them from living the fullest, most meaningful life possible.

Sometimes life feels very overwhelming and we can feel lost and disconnected, or even struggle with our self-worth. I work with
couples
and individuals who want to understand their behaviours and improve their communication and connection. You may struggle with your romantic relationships or friendships, or find yourself repeating the same patterns with different people in your life. Sometimes you feel anxious in your relationships, or don't feel connected at all. You may want to feel more at ease in your relationships with others and especially with yourself, experiencing less anxiety and feeling grounded when making decisions.

Finding a counsellor is just like looking for a significant other, the
relationship
needs to feel right for you to be best version of yourself.
I go by he/him/his and I work with folks who are in the marginalized group(s) (gay/bi/queer, person of colour... etc.) who experienced discrimination and/or sexual and physical assault who wants to have more options to respond and understand themselves. Folks who feel that they oftentimes react out of proportion to the situation and experienced challenges to trust and build favourable relationships with others. Folks who want to gain some perspectives on their own strengths and resilience. My client demographic so far has only been with men or masculine identifying individuals.

What we’ll work on together is understanding how the particulars of your life intersect with your
relationship
and shape your needs, communication, and boundaries.
I specialize in helping individuals and partners navigate the extra something that makes their
relationship
(s) a unique challenge. Folks I work with are often loving outside of the cisheteronormative & mononormative structure such as ethical non-monogamy, kink/BDSM, or other LGBTQ2S+ relationships. I also work with people whose experience of the world may be impacting their relationships, such as folks who are neurodivergent, individuals living with chronic illness or pain, or folks for whom trauma is showing up. I strive to help folks design the intentional relationships they are struggling to create on their own.

I have had 30 years experience working with individuals,
couples
and families and have been trained in a number of different modalities in that time.
I believe that every client is innately aware where they need to go (in therapy) to heal themselves. My role is to use my skills to help them along in that process. I meet clients where they are at recognizing that may change from session to session. We start with their goal(s) for counselling and work from there. I don't "need" to know anything in particular before we start. I find that with a trusting
relationship
, a client will share all that is relevant in order to attain their goal(s).

Couples Counselling
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
