We may not be able to control the external events or the actions of people around us; we can choose to respond in ways that strengthen and empower us, regardless of the situation we face. It is my belief and experience that by looking inwards, we can transform the impacts of our past and create a different future and perspective for ourselves.

It can be difficult to reach out and start therapy. It is important to find a psychologist who is warm and supportive and also has the training and experience to help you understand and resolve your difficulties. I have been a Registered Psychologist for almost twenty years. I have worked with teens and adults to address a variety of issues, including depression, anxiety, trauma, stress, anger, chronic pain, and the sequalae from traumatic brain injury. We will work together so that you can fully understand the nature of your symptoms, focus on your strengths, and learn new tools to address the problems that you are experiencing.

I incorporate elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy,
mindfulness
-based interventions, and Solution-Focused Therapy, but most importantly, I individualize my approach with your feedback to help you work through the concerns that brought you here.
In our journey of life, we may encounter experiences, emotions, and patterns that make it challenging for us to feel a sense of fulfillment in life. Participating in counselling can help you navigate and process these challenges, either from the past or present moment, constructively and build a more meaningful and satisfying life with new coping strategies and skills, insight and self-awareness, and changes in behaviours/environment through in-depth exploration of self. We are all work in progress, and although it can be daunting to begin this process, it can help you find that inner spark to change how you feel about your life.

For 30+ years I have been helping people struggling with relationships, as well as depression, anxiety, and meaning of life issues. My primary interest has always been in understanding what it is in the work we do together that actually makes a difference in helping the people I am working with, coupled with a clear recognition of the fundamental importance of the quality of our relationship together. Ultimately, I am not just trying to help people feel better, but to actually become better, recognizable both by them, and the people who matter in their lives. Throughout my training, including in the
mindfulness
and somatic practices, I developed a deep sense of empathy toward the suffering we all encounter in life.
Life is hardly ever easy. But suffering can be lessened, especially with the help of another human being, trained to help you navigate life's challenges and uncover your inner strengths. If you are seeking better self-understanding, leading to new ways of responding to the world so you can have better relationships, greater life’s satisfaction, a calmer mind, and greater resilience, then my approach to therapy could be right for you. I will work with you to help you untie your inner knots, reduce inner tension and confusion, and increase your capacity to cope with whatever life throws at you.

Drawing from empirically-supported treatments, I use CBT, psychodynamic therapy,
mindfulness
and psychoeducation to guide my work.
As both a therapist and a researcher, I aim to address the dynamic and lived experiences of those who may be struggling with a history of trauma, sexual distress or intimacy-related concerns. I often work with individuals who present well on the surface, seem completely put together when they want to be, and whose problems are not always apparent to others. While things might appear to be going well on the outside, privately they are hurting. Sometimes the source of distress is clearly known, other times it has yet to be discovered.

Would you be interested in finding out how your seemingly irrational thoughts, feelings and actions do make perfect sense taking into account your state of mind at a given point in time and under certain circumstances? That could ease your worries and give you proper comfort to practice
mindfulness
-- moment-to-moment awareness of your experiences without attachment to any particular point of view. You would reach then clarity of mind and lightness. I would help you develop awareness in the course of insight-oriented therapy. I could also provide action-oriented therapy by making suggestions and jointly designing strategies.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Counsellors
How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.
When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behaviour through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.
What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviours and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.
Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioural habits.
