Are you exhausted every day, especially on workdays? Have you grown increasingly cynical about your job and colleagues? Are you questioning if you chose the right profession? Imagine waking up fully rested after a great night’s sleep and feeling confident that you’ll be successful with all of the day’s challenges. Try to recall the incredible bliss of having energy at the end of a workday, feeling on top of your work, and being fully present with your family when they walk in the door.

Having your life disrupted by insomnia isn’t just physically exhausting. It’s mentally and emotionally draining too. Maybe you’ve made big changes to your life, like cutting out socializing or juggling endless sleep aids and routines (that don’t even work). It’s common to feel lonely and misunderstood. You may also feel confused about some of the physical symptoms happening in your body. I understand what you’re going through because I struggled with insomnia for 5 difficult years. While they were the hardest years of my life, I want you to know there is hope. You can absolutely get back to sleeping and feeling like yourself again.

We’ll practice routines for prompting relaxation and restorative sleep.
Counselling for high stress available. You find that you are constantly worried or feeling “on edge” due to racing thoughts or nightmares. You have difficulty sleeping at night, which causes you to feel drained and unrested in the morning. You are burdened by guilt, and you feel powerless to change your current situation. People comment that you're more “grumpy” than usual, but what they don't understand is that you're struggling emotionally. If this resonates with you, then you may be suffering from PTSD, which stems from high-stress situations. If you are ready to take back control of your life then you are in the right place.

Welcome! I appreciate your courage for landing here today. I am a second-generation Chinese Canadian immigrant and my heart lies in mental health work within the Asian and bicultural diaspora surrounding racism, intergenerational trauma, minority stress, and cultural grief. My lived experience helps me empathize with the complexities of balancing personal and collective needs, and the pain of staying silent to protect ourselves and others. I hope to empower fellow humans to reclaim their identity - to no longer negotiate their culture and values, and give themselves permission to take up space in the world.

When my daughter was only three months old my husband got suddenly extremely sick, to the point that he almost didn’t make it. Although this marked a challenging moment in our lives, it was also a very transformative time. Once we survived those gruelling months, we decided to change our lives and do more of what we love. It was time for me to do what I always wanted to do in life, to help others find ways to fulfill there lives to the fullest as well as help people transition through difficult circumstances.

At an early age and throughout my life, as I have struggled with life’s ebbs and flows, I have realized how support and connection can provide people with a space for discovery. Through my own personal experiences, I have learned how essential it is to have a space to be heard. I believe in supporting those who are struggling to have a voice, and for that voice to provide a pathway towards growth and wellness. I am passionate about people, healing, and supporting those who need it most. My personal and professional values are intertwined. Challenging events? Life changes? Overwhelmed? Stressed? Needing balance? Struggling with anxiety, relationships, depression, grief, decisions, performance? Looking forward to getting to where you want to be, to achieving your dreams, to fulfilling your potential, or to simply getting back to "normal" again after an overwhelmingly difficult loss or event? Or maybe even for the first time...Being on top of your game or moving on after challenging events or hurtful experiences is not easy. But there are ways through and I can help.

Sleep or Insomnia Counsellors

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
