I am passionate about working with relational challenges and trauma healing. Through values of connection, safety, intentionality, and collaboration, I combine talk therapy (exploring the connection between our emotions, thoughts, and the body) with body-based (somatic) and
mindfulness
-based approaches. I hope to empower you and support you in your journey of self-awareness, self-understanding, and self-compassion. With warmth, sensitivity, compassion, transparency, and shared vulnerability, I will meet you where you are and collaborate with you on what feels most supportive for you in your healing.

I often draw on interventions and resources from CBT, Attachment Theory,
Mindfulness
, and meaning-making approaches.
Welcome! My name is Alex and I bring to the therapy room over nine years of experience working with and supporting individuals and families in need. I have a Master’s in Counselling Psychology (MCP) from Adler University, and while I have called Vancouver home for many years, I am originally from Quebec. I appreciate that each person’s journey through life is unique, and therefore my approach to counselling is primarily person-centred. I believe that authentic connection, empathy, and unconditional acceptance are essential in fostering the safety needed for healing to occur. My work in sessions is collaborative and trauma-informed.

Appointments may include: biofeedback training,
mindfulness
meditations, progressive relaxation, guided imagery, therapeutic exercises and postural/movement awareness, cognitive reframing, breathwork and breath retraining, lifestyle counseling and the Safe and Sound Protocol.
I am a Naturopathic Doctor with further training in counseling and mind body medicine. My trauma informed approach is gentle and offers support as you take on this journey to health and wellbeing. To reach optimum health you will learn to know yourself at a deeper physical and mental level. This means knowledge of how you breath, move, talk to yourself and how you orient in the world. Patterns that were created in childhood can then be changed to one’s that are more productive. You will be rewiring the nervous system and creating new pathways that will bring greater peace and resilience.

My integrative approach pulls from several different counselling methodologies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT),
Mindfulness
, Solution-Focused Therapy, Trauma-Informed Practice, Motivational Interviewing, and Collaborative Problem Solving.
As a counsellor, I believe our joys, triumphs, pains and struggles tell a story that is unique to each individual. Many times when we feel at our worst we have a hard time seeing the value in our journeys. I believe a safe and healthy therapeutic relationship can shift this perspective and allow us to take lessons from our experiences which can then foster hope, growth and change. I strongly believe there is no one-size-fits-all therapy, and I work to tailor my treatment plan to each person's needs. I offer counselling to children, youth, young adults, families, and the elderly.

I've been counselling in private practice in Halifax and Vancouver for over 10 years and my focus is supporting adults with anxiety. Anxiety is common and presents with a variety of symptoms and can result from a multitude of causes, and while these are common experiences they may become problematic when they interfere with our daily living. Anxiety may stem from unresolved negative experiences such as grief and loss events, health issues, relationship problems, workplace challenges, to name just a few.

I am an integrative therapist, who combines ideas/techniques from different therapeutic schools of thought, such as systemic therapy, self-compassion/
mindfulness
-based therapy, CBT, analytical psychology, attachment-based therapy, and others.
Many of my clients identify as 2slgbtqia+, immigrant/refugees, and/or neurodivergent with ADHD or autism. Clients should expect to become more aware of themselves: their wants, their thoughts, their emotions, and their bodies, which can make it easier for them to make decisions that are aligned with their values and intentions. Clients can have the chance to incorporate healthy habits and to develop new skills for their toolbox.

My style of coaching is client-led, active, adventurous, collaborative, and compassionately challenging. Using specialised, bottom-up and top-down approaches to leverage brain design, functionality, and neuroplasticity, sessions go above and beyond the standard formulaic coaching model to engage the subconscious mind, deepen transformation, foster rapid results, and facilitate positive long-term change in neural architecture.

Life is inherently complex and challenging. Sometimes these challenges feel overwhelming and this is where psychology can help. In an environment of understanding and acceptance, psychologists can help you better identify those strengths that have served you well in the past, while at the same time assist you in learning new ways of solving problems and coping with life's difficulties.

Cognitive Behavioural, and Internal Family System models.
As a counsellor, I intend to bring compassion, openness, curiosity, genuineness and cultural sensitivity to create a warm, safe and non-judgmental space for the clients to heal and change. I aim to utilize awareness and presence as instruments of empowerment for my clients. I invite the clients to make contact with their senses, emotions and thoughts in the present moment to facilitate awareness and acceptance, as I believe healing and change happen when individuals accept and embrace who they are.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Counsellors
How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.
When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behaviour through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.
What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviours and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.
Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioural habits.
