People are not their diagnoses even though these labels can sometimes be informative. I prefer to get to know you. Specifically, what do you want out of therapy? What is currently working for you, not working? What brings you in to see me in this moment? I believe that therapy is not only about reducing our suffering, but also finding meaning and fulfillment in our lives. It is about getting to know ourselves, parts that we love, parts that we are afraid of, parts that we don't yet understand. People are also not things that need to be "fixed", instead, this is a place for healing, self-compassion, and growth.

Areas of interest: resilience & posttraumatic growth, women's mental health & wellness, communication & relationship skills, couples counselling, post-IPV support (non-crisis), single parent support, parenting kids with medical/mental health complexities, chronic illness (patient and caregiver), parental narcissism, relational trauma, gender & sexuality.
Therapy is your place to be exactly as you are. I offer compassionate, non-judgmental therapy so you can feel free to be yourself. My practice is strengths-based, trauma-informed, and client-centered. Many of my areas of practice are grounded in lived experience, which supports my ability to offer authentic compassion and empathy. I've navigated the challenges of feeling overwhelmed by trauma and systemic barriers. Thankfully, my journey taught me that when we find good-fit therapy and work on developing deeper self-compassion, we are so much stronger and more capable of healing than we ever imagined possible.

How do you find the best counsellor for you? This is a difficult choice and often being open and communicating with your counsellor will ensure optimal healing. I come from an acceptance of where you are in your journey. I do not believe the goal of counselling is “counselling itself”, but to find a way to move forward in your journey. "To feel safe with other people is probably the single most important aspect of mental health” (Bessel Van der Kolk, 2014).

Hi there, my name is Kathryn Gardiner. I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor and I love what I do. Life is hard. For everyone. Finding someone to help make it less so can be tricky and also deeply rewarding. I believe in not only championing and supporting my clients but equipping them with the skills necessary to reach their greatest potential. I take great pride in walking alongside those who recognize the need to do a little digging. Witnessing the courage it takes to do so never ceases to move me, and in turn inspires me to continue my work. On the job and off.

As both a therapist and a researcher, I aim to address the dynamic and lived experiences of those impacted by intergenerational trauma, aspects of culture and acculturation, sexual distress or intimacy-related concerns. I often work with individuals who present well on the surface, seem completely put together when they want to be, and whose problems are not always apparent to others. While things might appear to be going well on the outside, privately they are hurting. Sometimes the source of distress is clearly known, other times it has yet to be discovered.

Hey, life sucks sometimes. When life starts to suck a lot, that's when it's not ok. Therapy is a connection between two, equal people: we meet, and together, we figure out what's not working (and how to stop it) and what IS working (and how to do more of it). We co-research all this stuff through questions, reflections, somatic work, and support. No matter what, I’ll always be real with you and I'll always be on your team. I work mostly with people struggling with "I just don't feel right": whether that's parenting stuff, mom guilt, relationship issues, family drama, or just trying to find out who you are and who you want to be.

There are various issues that come up in life, from every day life stresses to unimaginable trauma. We all cope differently with what life has given us and heal in our own unique way. I am passionate about therapy as I have personally experienced, witnessed and facilitated immense healing through the therapeutic process. Human beings are social with a deep drive toward contact and connection. Regardless of what we have experienced in life there is an accessible pathway for all of us back to the core of our being where a true sense of self worth, peace and contentment reside.

We all struggle at times. Whether it is a low mood that lingers too long, or anxiety that inhibits your life. Feeling like a failure, a bad parent, or like you just do not feel at home in your skin can start to feel like it poisons everything. Confidence dwindles, emotions feel too unpredictable, or stress seems to get under your skin more than it used to. You may be finding that your close relationships are more stressful than they used to be. Life may feel like it’s getting smaller and smaller. You know something has to change. It is time to reach out for help.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
