Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists in Surrey, BC
I offer EMDR therapy with CBT to support healing from anxiety, OCD, and stress or trauma, often from relationships or earlier life.
Starting therapy can feel like finally opening that storage space you've been avoiding. It's full of things you don't want to deal with but know you have to. Some of it makes sense, and some of it... you don't even know how it got there, and it probably should have been thrown out a long time ago.
I work with people who are stuck in patterns of overthinking, high stress and anxiety, bracing for something bad to happen, or repeating old patterns that no longer serve them. Sometimes it the endless stress of daily life, and sometimes it is difficult life experiences that hold us back. Often, it is both.

Also works in areas of self-discovery, identity, enneagram coaching, anxiety, elite athletes/peak performance, obsessive-compulsive issues, trauma & abuse, among others.
I believe that the experiences we have in our inner and outer world teach us something about the world, ourselves, and others; and they contribute to the forming of often unconscious patterns in the way we think, feel, and act. These experiences can even be stored in the body/nervous system, otherwise known as trauma. In other words, our experiences help create a “map” that show us how to navigate uncertainty, relationships with others, and relationships with our selves. I believe that people come to therapy when those 'maps' are no longer working and need updating. That's where I come in!

At New Heights, we specialize in the treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
If you're suffering from this condition, you'll be looking for the type of treatment that addresses your specific symptoms. You may be reluctant to describe your symptoms to a professional for fear of being judged, misunderstood or mislabeled. Unfortunately, there are very few counsellors/psychologists who truly understand how to treat with this condition. Quite often, OCD is misdiagnosed, leading to an inappropriate treatment focus. Choosing professionals who can properly assess this condition is extremely important. Our clinicians are professionally trained OCD therapists and active members of the International OCD Foundation. Most of our clinicians have extensive experience in outpatient mental health programs and have worked with a range of mental health conditions.

We are a specialized team of mental health professionals providing high-quality counselling and trauma therapy to individuals and couples. We know that talk therapy is beneficial, but we realized that many of our clients’ problems require a deeper and more integrative approach. Stressful and traumatic experiences leave lasting impacts on peoples’ minds and their bodies, which can make them feel stuck in the same patterns. By integrating neurobiologically-based therapies such as EMDR, OEI and Somatic Experiencing into talk therapy (CBT, narrative), our team specializes in helping people break free from discouragement and overwhelm.

My ideal client will be ready for a positive change - believing in themselves and their accomplishments! I believe in good conversations and building relationship through Trust, Respect and Confidentiality. Each and everyone of them are unique and they have their own stories to share in a Safe Space without being judged. There are many issues that can affect an individual - the goal is that they feel heard, as someone is listening to them without any biases. At times, people remain in denial as this service could be taboo for them. This can shift through awareness, education and advocacy. This is their very own precious journey ....

Our past experiences impact us in ways we may not even realize. Our nervous system jumps in to protect us in ways that it has helped us survive in the past (this could look like feeling foggy, anxious, depressed or numb). This often prevents us from operating how we wish to. Working to reconnect the body with the mind to our present, adult self can help resolve this disconnection. I believe that we all deserve to experience connection, empathy, attunement and safety and that this is often the missing piece.

I believe we all go through struggles and experiences in life where we may need extra support to rise above. I provide an empathetic and holistic approach to building trust and open communication within our counselling relationship. I am also open-minded and am culturally inclusive.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Counsellors
How long does OCD treatment take?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.
What happens if OCD is not treated?
Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.
Are there medications for OCD?
Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine, fluoxetine, and sertraline, among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.
Can OCD come back after treatment?
Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
