I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor fluent in English and Mandarin and hold a master’s degree in counselling from City University of Seattle, Vancouver. I have been in the field of helping people for over a decade, and that’s where my passion is. I have specifically assisted divorced/separated families for over eight years. I have a deep understanding of such a situation's dynamics, special needs, and difficulties and have my whole heart towards it. I also understand well about immigration families from my background. Although I spent my adulthood here, I have never forgotten my roots. With a gentle and warm approach,

As a divorce coach, I work with families to develop effective plans that put the children first, revise existing plans, improve communication , and help with co-parent decision making.
One of the most difficult things to do in life is to ask for help. I understand that making the first call is stressful, and I am open to hearing your concerns as soon as we connect. I encompass a non judgmental approach, based on strength and resilience. I work collaboratively with my clients to empower them to make important changes in their lives. As a counselor, I support each client's own experience of their story. I take a holistic approach to understand the many layers that surround life challenges, to create connections and promote change.

I believe counselling is a journey for people to heal from the trauma they experienced so that they are able to live freely. My role as a therapist is to provide a safe place for people and walk with them to help them deal with their hurt and pain. Thus they can resolve their emotional blockage and have both better intrapersonal and interpersonal relationships. I help clients express emotions, address past trauma, connect past experiences to current issues, identify root causes of problems, and facilitate positive changes for effective future problem-solving. I am fluent in speaking Cantonese, English and Mandarin.

Sometimes we’ve been wounded. We are bitter and end up in hard places. We are in relationships that have grown painful, disappointing, even hopeless. It seems there are insurmountable chasms, and we are stuck with nowhere to go. Sometimes the hard places consume all our joy, and we are simply numb. Our emotions have dried up, and we no longer feel. At other times, the hard places can trigger fear, desperation, or panic attacks.

Welcome! My name is Alex and I bring to the therapy room over 14 years of experience working with and supporting individuals and families in need. I have a Master’s in Counselling Psychology (MCP) from Adler University, and while I have called Vancouver home for many years, I am originally from Quebec. I appreciate that each person’s journey through life is unique, and therefore my approach to counselling is primarily person-centred. I believe that authentic connection, empathy, and unconditional acceptance are essential in fostering the safety needed for healing to occur. My work in sessions is collaborative and trauma-informed.

Do I need to attend therapy with my child?

Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.

How long are sessions with child therapists?

Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.

How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?

The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.

How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?

A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
