Sexuality, intimacy, kink, and non-normative relationship desire narratives. Queer and trans existence and dealing with competing realities at the end of the anthropocene. 'Should I stay or should I go?' questions. Late diagnosis neurodiversity. Parenting, separation, divorce, making sense of the incomprehensibly difficult. We'll be a good fit if you are engaged in trying to live a meaningful life, if your feelings have been described as 'too much', if your heart is often on your sleeve, if you have stayed up late worrying about what this all means, if you want someone in your corner who can also tell it like it is.

Art Therapy merges counselling with creative expression to aid in therapy. The focus is on participation rather than artistic ability. This approach benefits individuals of all ages by encouraging self-expression and gaining insights through the creative process. When working with children, Art Therapy is especially beneficial as they may find it challenging to express themselves verbally. Younger individuals are more accustomed to expressing and communicating through action, creativity, imagination, and play. Art Therapy taps into these forms of expression, fostering emotional growth, comprehension, and connection.

I believe that every client is unique and an expert in themselves. Sometimes, however, circumstances or events feel overwhelming and intrude on our ability to live the life we want. Having a person to support us on our journey to healing is necessary to feel capable of processing and transforming.

I have immense gratitude to be a psychotherapist for thirty years and still feel a sense of awe in the strength and resilience and wisdom inherent in each person I meet. My role as a psychotherapist is to help you access the wisdom inside you so that you may heal from what has prevented you from being in a place of peace and contentment in yourself. Together we will transform loss, trauma, and life transitions into new hope and possibilities. Therapy is a journey for you to discover and re-discover the real you. It's about bringing more joy and creativity into each day and having more presence in all the moments of your life.

I often tell my clients that what they hear from me will be counter cultural. It is counter cultural in the sense that I talk about self-acceptance and worth regardless of size. I believe hope exists even when you can't see it, that mental health issues are not a sign of weakness and that I practice in a way that believes in change.

Do you ever wonder where you truly belong or if there’s a place where you can feel completely understood and happy? The answer lies within you. Sometimes, the thoughts, strategies, and defenses we create to protect ourselves in vulnerable moments can become toxic for us over time and we try to run away. Neil Gaiman wisely observed, “Wherever you go, you take yourself with you.” This suggests that our answers and treasures are internal.

Anxiety and depression are common issues in my practice and they can be the underlying condition in many situations. They can affect relationships, parenting, work performance, family dynamics to name a few. Therapy can assist with problem solving and gaining a better understanding of the behaviours that are causing difficulties in life. Some of my work involves life coaching and I am also a divorce coach. I offer expertise and support in the overwhelming process of separation and the difficulties involved in supporting children through divorce and separation.

Hello, I'm Caroline - an RN and nurse psychotherapist. I deeply understand how life and the human experience can be messy, confusing and difficult to navigate alone. I understand how one can lose track of themselves when things like grief, trauma, stress, depression, anxiety, and addiction limit feeling connected to self, others and the world around them. I also know that sometimes people need guides to help illuminate the path in order to know where to take their next step. If you relate to these words, know that I'm here to walk with you as you bravely step into healing, creating a life you love, and personal growth.

I envision life as a journey that is influenced by our experiences, our relationships with others, and our personal, societal, and cultural stories. As a therapist, I believe my role is to join you on your journey for a stretch, as a kind of wilderness guide who may be able to point out unrecognized phenomena, different perspectives, and highlight your strengths and values as they relate to your journey. The goals and direction are yours, and together, we will create a plan that's right for you. Coming to counselling is hugely courageous; I commend you on beginning your search for a therapist who will be a good fit for your goals.

I launched Nested Heart Counselling in 2013 in response to a call from the local polyamorous community saying how challenging it was to find mental health support that didn’t require further education about unconventional identities. I have collected a group of counsellors with similar values, experience and training as myself across BC. Roxanna, Katree, Chelsey Jessamyn, Kenzie and Cora all have availability right now for new individual clients. We often have a practicum student who has reduced cost counselling sessions available in Victoria, Port Moody, Powell River and online. You can explore their extensive bios on our website.

Do you yearn for change, desire to understand yourself better, and have an eagerness to break free from the patterns that tether you to repeating cycles? If you answered yes, but are also plagued by self-doubt, uncertainty, and worry; you're not alone. You may find yourself longing for deeper connections, grappling with the intricacies of relationship dynamics, and a complex emotional landscape that leaves you weary and questioning your direction. In all of this, you have difficulty setting boundaries, have no time for yourself, and feel disconnected from life. You may be healing from attachment wounds. This is where I come in.

Each one of us is connected to others through relationships - the vitality of these bonds is crucial for our well being. Yet, relating to others may at times seem like trying to crack a secret code. Do you struggle to have your needs met? Your voice heard? Or maybe you just want to be better understood by others? I believe learning to get what you need from others and from life is a process that starts with ourselves. I will be with you as we challenge the obstacles and bring decisions into line with your values.

Individual and relationship clients might choose me as their counsellor because they want help working through conflict or dilemmas. Identifying needs, clarifying values, picking a direction and developing strategies to achieve goals are key components the therapeutic journey. Together, we would explore transgenerational patterns, core beliefs, and narratives about the issues to improve overall client well-being. I am keen to work with clients who struggle with substance use, trauma responses, career satisfaction, and interpersonal conflict.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
