Trauma can take many forms and have profound impacts. Whether it shows up in physical (such as panic, or exhaustion), emotional (like feeling anxious, sad, angry, or out of control) or more outward manifestations (the relationships we find ourselves in, or the cycles we seem stuck in), the truth is that trauma, and the things that we have gone through, can continue to show up in our lives and our systems for a long time. You might be at a place where you are ready to identify, unpack, and untether your trauma from your current and future life so that you can begin to feel a greater sense of control, freedom, and peace.

It has been for too long that we have not given ourselves permission to fully grieve our losses. Whether it is a fear that allowing the grief to be experienced will be too much to bear, or the belief that we don't have as bad a situation as others, there are many reasons that we don't allow ourselves to grieve fully after our losses. This unprocessed grief will affect us, mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Together, we will explore resources around and within you to honor your grief and move through it. Village Grief Counselling is an oasis for individuals experiencing loss.

My passion for counselling came from both personal and professional experience in asking for support and supporting others. I believe connection to others, along with a safe non-judgemental space to be heard can allow us to begin the journey in growth, healing and self exploration. I believe all our emotions, behaviours, and thoughts serve a purpose – even those we perceive as negative- and that by understanding that purpose, we can better understand ourselves and our relationships.

“The two most important days in your life are the day you were born and the day you figure out why.” Mark Twain
Therapy isn’t about labels or being told what to do. It’s about motivation for change and cultivating change in your life. Self awareness is essential for change as Socrates said with his “Know Thyself” quote. From self-awareness comes the awareness of choice. From the awareness of choice comes the all-important awareness of responsibility. It’s your life and, hence, your responsibility. I strive to help you in this process by getting to know you, your goals, challenges and the way you make sense of your life.

You look like you have it together. But underneath, you are exhausted. You overthink. You people-please. You keep finding yourself in the same painful patterns, no matter how hard you try. Some days you feel too much. Other days, completely numb. The anxiety lives in your chest, your stomach, your sleep, not just your head. Maybe you have carried family expectations or cultural pressures for so long that you have lost sight of who you actually are. You are not broken. You are someone who has been carrying too much, for too long, alone. And you are ready for something different.

How does cognitive processing therapy work?
A CPT therapist helps a client evaluate their thoughts about the trauma they experienced, focusing on maladaptive or self-blaming thoughts that can exacerbate symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, or depression. The therapist will work with a client to help them learn to challenge such thoughts and consider different perspectives. The therapist is also likely to ask a client to work on these techniques at home between meetings, such as writing an account of their trauma that can be read aloud during a future session.
What is cognitive processing therapy for PTSD?
Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) is a form of cognitive-behavioural therapy primarily used in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to treat individuals who experienced abuse or violence, who survived natural disasters, who were first responders to such incidents, or who otherwise experienced trauma.
How long does cognitive processing therapy last?
CPT is a short-term therapy. Whether conducted one-on-one or in a group, a complete set of CPT sessions typically includes 12 weekly sessions, along with tasks for clients to complete at home, although this can vary depending on a client’s needs or a therapist’s particular treatment plan. Sessions typically last 60 or 90 minutes.
How effective is cognitive processing therapy?
A large body of research supports the use of CPT to treat people experiencing PTSD, finding it to be effective among different age groups, either in one-on-one therapy sessions or in a group therapy environment. Research suggests that although the initial sessions may be difficult, clients tend to begin to feel positive progress after the first few sessions, and that the benefits tend to last well after the therapy ends.
