What would it take to live the life you imagined? Have you truly found your authentic self? Visit me at Aster Wellness Centre and we will explore these questions to consider your current path. We often have our sights set high but lose track of what is truly important due to unexpected obstacles such as immense anxiety , anger, depression, fear, grief, and personal traumas. We don't ask for these things, but they are occasionally placed along our path, and can easily trip us up. The feeling that we are stuck or unable to realize our potential sets in.

I frequently work, though not exclusively, with clients who struggle with depression, anxiety , life transition and career direction. Seeking help can be stressful. I offer a safe space for clients to work on their issues and support them in ways that are just right for them. We co-construct the clients' desired future. Making changes can be stressful for the clients. I seek to support the clients in working out their next small step forward. When I work with clients challenged with anxiety or depression, I will help them to understand the mechanics of anxiety or depression and to acquire skills to cope with anxiety or depression.

I draw from my experience not only as a counsellor but as a teacher who has worked with youth struggling with depression and anxiety .
As a therapist, I am all about connection and relationships. My job is to create space for you to explore your experiences while feeling connected and supported. My counselling style is flexible to suit the needs of my clients. My practice is centered on humour, empathy, and understanding to help guide clients to deal with the challenges that life presents. My first experience with counselling was as a client and what I enjoyed about the process was the ability to talk through my problems, feel supported and learn more about myself. My passion is to be able to provide that same support to my clients.

At different times in our lives we face challenges that are more than we feel we can handle. Counselling is an opportunity for you to explore, learn, discover, and grow as a person. I believe that having a safe, non-judgemental, and empathic place to explore your needs is the perfect starting point for change. I work primarily with adolescents and young adults to support them across the challenges and transitions those ages can bring. Some of the more common areas I work with clients on include; Identity, Grief, Trauma, Depression, Anxiety , and Communication.

My ideal client is somebody who is open to change. I am a client-centred practitioner who wants to help you achieve your personal mental health goals. Some common goals in my clinical practice have been: understanding why I feel this way, reducing my anxiety and/or depression, learning how to regulate emotions, learning to let go, and general self-exploration. I have a special interest in emotional regulation, self-destructive behaviours and the impact of exercise on emotional regulation.

I have particular skills in treating ADHD in motivated adolescents and adults, and in treating anxiety issues in persons of all ages.
Reaching out for help with a problem can be very intimidating! It may help you to know that our work together will always be based upon YOUR values and goals and a shared understanding of the problem. I use cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness-based methods to help people who struggle with unpleasant feelings, problem behaviors, or under-functioning. I'm a huge fan of ACT Therapy, which helps you to notice and disentangle from unhelpful thoughts, notice and accept diffiuclt feelings, orient to the present moment and commit to actions that move you towards what you want in life - towards your values!

Anxiety Counsellors

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
