I enjoy working with youth and adults who are struggling with trauma, impacts of domestic violence, anxiety, body image/disordered eating, depression, life transitions, suicidal ideation, ADHD, family and peer conflict, and substance use disorders.
I draw from many different counselling frameworks including Intersectional Feminist Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Emotion Focused Family Therapy, and Solution Focused Brief Therapy. Ultimately, I believe that the connection between the counsellor and the client is the most important thing for therapy to work!

Seeking therapy is a sign of a personal strength, not a weakness. It takes awareness in our lives and courage to be able to reach out for help. Often people who engage in therapy are actually doing well in life but would like to do better in one area or another. I believe that the client is the expert on them and it is my role to support them to reach the goals that they set. Now excepting virtual clients in British Columbia.

My therapy approach is relational and collaborative. Feeling comfortable and connected is when therapy is most effective. My goal is to support you to understand yourself and what you need; to come back home to yourself. I tend to work with folks who aren’t feeling satisfied with their quality of life. This may show up as perfectionism, lack of motivation, hyper-independence, people pleasing tendencies, imposter syndrome etc. I have experience working in healthcare, not for profit, and private settings.

Trauma impacts how we see the world, navigate through our experiences, and connect with others. While you are not the product of a single experience or relationship, sometimes one experience can feel so overwhelming that it overtakes over all others. Together, you can start to move towards a life where this problem or memory is no longer an obstacle.

Whether you’re feeling stuck, moving through loss or change, or just disconnected from yourself, counselling can help. Many of the people I work with are capable and high-functioning, yet quietly struggle with anxiety, emptiness, or patterns in relationships that don’t make sense. Through a somatic and attachment-based approach, I help you understand how trauma, attachment wounds, or younger parts of yourself may be shaping your present. Together, we’ll create space for healing so you can feel more grounded, connected, and authentic in daily life.

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?
Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?
The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
