Sleep or Insomnia Therapists in New Westminster, BC
Hello, I am Autumn! I work largely with play, expressive and nature based therapy. I work with children, teens, and adults. Play is how children communicate so there is no better way to work with the concerns that are close at heart then through play for little ones. Don't think that play is only for kids though - expressive therapy like painting, clay, movement, and other creative ways of being can help even those of us that doubt we are "artistic" reach a deeper level of self-connection and authenticity. Nature is a wonderful way to feel connection to something bigger than us while increasing our grounding and mindfulness skills.

Nowadays, we are living in a world that is so advanced yet in many ways leave us feeling stressed and inadequate. if you are struggling with Anxiety, Depression, Difficult relationships, Career Dissatisfaction, Self Limiting Habits and Self Sabotage, you are not alone. Often times these issues show up in our experiences as Fear, Anger, Resentment, Sadness, Weight Gain, Addictive Habits, Fatigue, Sleepiness or Sleeplessness, Headaches, Phobias and many more. Where are you right now? Are you tired of seeking? Change can be paralyzing but the only way to get to the direction you want is to take that first step in spite of the fear.

You may be feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck in patterns that no longer feel aligned with who you want to be. Many of the people I work with are navigating trauma, addiction, grief and loss, or ongoing anxiety, shame, or low self esteem. You may be seeking relief, clarity, or a deeper sense of understanding, along with a space where you can slow down and feel genuinely heard. Often the goal is not to fix something, but to feel more grounded, regulated, and connected to yourself and your life.

Thank you for taking a moment to look at my profile. I am a clinical counsellor who primarily provides care to populations that have more difficulty accessing health services. I am referring to people living in small towns and rural areas, the population that has an aversion to the healthcare system due to having previously faced barriers and prejudices, and also to populations who often find it difficult to access the system itself, such as immigrant and refugee communities. Beyond the principles that guide clinical practice, in the therapeutic space that I strive to provide, perhaps my greatest concerns are hope and human dignity.

We sometimes find ourselves lacking in the opportunity to experience joy, creativity, meaning, and connection in our lives. Welcome to a turning point in your life. I’m Alisa - RCC, CCC, EMDR Trained Therapist, and ADHD Certified Clinical Service Provider. Here’s the truth. You don’t need to keep fighting alone or guessing what’s wrong. You don’t need to pretend you’re fine. Imagine this for a moment. You set the weight down. You stop apologizing for your struggles. You stop pushing your feelings aside just to get through the day. And for the first time in a long time, you feel safe enough to breathe. Inner peace isn’t a myth. Self-acceptance isn’t out of reach. And the strengths you forgot you had? They’re still there - waiting to be uncovered.

If grief feels too heavy, anxiety is getting in the way of your day to day living, or negative experiences continue to shape how you move through life, you don't have to face this alone. Even considering reaching out speaks to your strength, desire, and readiness for something different. How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.
Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.
Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.
What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
