Psychodynamic Therapists in New Westminster, BC
Hi, I’m Megan. I support young adult men and women who are used to holding everything together for others while quietly struggling on their own. You may be the person others rely on, the one who keeps going, caring, and pushing through even when you’re overwhelmed. Somewhere along the way, you may have learned to minimize or suppress your emotions, overthink everything, or put your own needs aside just to get by. Often, these patterns began as a way to navigate difficult experiences, relationships, or environments. Sometimes, you simply know something doesn’t feel okay, even if you can’t explain why.

Reaching out for therapy often starts with a quiet realization: something isn’t sitting right anymore. Maybe you’re carrying anxiety that won’t ease, stress that feels constant, trauma that still lingers, or patterns around mood, relationships, or substance use that feel hard to shift on your own. You might be used to managing it all yourself, but part of you knows you don’t have to. I aim to show up with steadiness, empathy, and genuine curiosity about your inner world. I strive to be fully present, to listen without judgment, and to create a space where you feel safe enough to be honest and vulnerable.

I employ an eclectic approach, involving a talk therapy/ psychodynamic method to uncover the root causes of your challenges, followed by behavioral treatments like CBT, ACT, and DBT to help modify unhelpful thinking and behaviors.
My clients want relief from emotional pain and guidance on their journey toward self-improvement. They may have tried self-help strategies, or perhaps even other therapists, but they’re still looking for something deeper and more effective. They want to work with someone who has life experience that truly understands them, someone who can see past surface-level issues and help uncover the deeper, root causes of their struggles. They are motivated by a desire to live authentically, experience healthier relationships, and break free from negative cycles that have held them back in the past.

I am a Jamaican living in Vancouver. As a recent immigrant, I am aware of how the process and experience of forging a new life can bring both satisfaction and distress especially in intimate relationships. Life transitions can cause emotional stress and often, we need help to tap into our own inherent strengths. Sexuality and sexual behaviours can also be challenging for some but, I am passionate about working with individuals and couples of all genders, orientations, races and ethnicities. I also specialize in addictions which I view as a maladaptive coping skill for traumatic situations.

Psychodynamic Counsellors
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
