Hi, I’m Ashley. I bring warmth and gentleness into the counselling space, creating a safe place to explore those parts of ourselves we may find difficult to face. Counselling can be a wonderful space for growth, as it often asks us to be honest with ourselves. That honesty can feel uncomfortable at times but is often the thing that comes right before a new version of us emerges.

Hi, my name is Makita and I’m happy to see you chose to visit my page. I work with young adults, adults, and couples, who are interested in learning to cope with life’s challenges. This includes anxiety, stress, depression, relationship issues, anger, feeling overwhelmed or burnt out. My clients are looking for and need a supportive therapist who can sit with them during their lowest points, be bold and honest with them during their denials and can offer practical tools they can utilize outside of the therapy room. Their goal is to feel better because they want better for themselves and their situations.

It takes courage to seek and begin therapy, and I value and respect that. I am passionate about working with all people, however they choose to identify themselves. I work with adults, young to old. I consider each individual as a "world unto themself"; I work with your goals, your spark, your way. My goal is to help you find the tools to move towards what you most want. I'm on your side. I draw from therapies such as solution focused, trauma based, CBT and ACT. Possibility lies in the present - what we do, how we choose to act, alone and with others - this is the arena of change.

You may feel stuck in your head, overthinking, replaying conversations, or feeling overwhelmed but unsure why. I often work with individuals experiencing anxiety, overthinking, relationship patterns, and life transitions, including those navigating identity, and cultural experiences. On the outside, you may look like you have it together, but inside, it feels exhausting. I offer a warm, relational space to explore what your emotions are trying to tell you, make sense of patterns, and reconnect with yourself.

I welcome you, if you are ready to make deep and lasting changes in your life to find fulfillment, meaning, new skills and appreciation. I believe that each one of us is on a journey of recovery, healing, repairing, growing and learning how to manifest authentically and creatively. I also believe that the individual personal work we do directly impacts those in our life and our society at large. I know that we need to be connected to our families, neighbours, communities to find health. Similarly, we need to honour our land, our resources and all sentient beings. I look forward to meeting you in person or at a distance.

My intervention consists of a variety of therapeutic techniques including body psychotherapy, EMDR, hypnotherapy to heal past wounds, Emotional Freedom Technique to adjust intense emotions, mindfulness cognitive behavioural therapy to correct faulty perception, talking therapy to talk things out.
You feel life is a constant struggle despite help of all sorts. You are not the same person you used to be. You have trouble finding motivation to do things. You anger easily with everyday little things. Stress at work and home become too much to handle. You are at your wits' end and you have trouble seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. However, you are reaching out now, there is hope to turn your life around. All that you need is willingness and readiness to work through your struggle.

How does an intervention work?
An intervention is a planned, structured meeting in which a person’s family or friends voice concerns about the person’s behaviour and its consequences; the goal is for the person to accept treatment. In this meeting, the person’s loved ones (often with the guidance of a trained interventionist) share how the person’s behaviour has harmed them and the consequences if the person refuses treatment. They collectively ask the person to accept a proposed treatment plan.

How effective are interventions?
There isn’t extensive research on the efficacy of interventions, in part because success is difficult to measure. Individuals often enter addiction treatment after an intervention, for example, but treatment itself may not work, especially if the person only begins due to external pressure from others rather than due to internal motivation to change. However, if all other attempts at helping someone have failed, an intervention may be worth exploring.

What are the limitations of interventions?
While a friend or family member’s intentions are in the right place in wanting to help a loved one through an intervention, there are significant limitations to the approach. The surprising nature of the event can make the person feel ambushed or judged. They may feel embarrassed or ashamed as a result, and relationships may be strained or broken. This can make it difficult for the individual to be receptive to the concerns of their loved ones and the interventionist.

Are there alternatives to interventions?
Rather than confronting a loved one through an intervention, an effective and less pressured approach is to create space for a caring, open, one-on-one conversation. This works best if the loved one asks open-ended questions, listens attentively to the answers, and frames their observations and statements with concern rather than judgment. More than one conversation may be needed, but change can take root over time.
