As a registered therapeutic counsellor, I use Somatic therapy to support clients in their process of connecting with themselves and processing trauma stored within the body. Somatic therapy is a body-centered therapy. It is a trauma-informed approach that works to regulate the nervous system, promotes embodiment, and provides individuals with the opportunity to connect with themselves in a new way. I use a combination of somatic therapy, person-centred counseling and empathetic listening to provide clients with a safe environment to begin their wellness journey.

I am located in downtown Nelson and over both online and in person sessions Monday to Friday.
It’s human to undergo hardship and difficulty and sometimes as humans we need a little extra support with life’s challenges from a non-partial witness. Through deep listening and compassionate reflection I endeavour to hold a safe and welcoming space that allows clients to show up exactly as they are so they can freely and safely explore their difficulties. I specialize in experiences of chronic stress/burnout, relationship stress, anxiety and depression well as trauma and abuse using mindfulness and somatic-based approaches. I also specialize in neurodivergent affirming therapeutic approaches for ADHD and AuDHD individuals.

I am currently primarily online for sessions but do offer walk and talk options for locals in Nelson BC.
Are you struggling with your identities (queer, neurodivergent, non-monogamous, kinky)? Have you had past experiences within those identities/spaces that are holding you back from living life the way that you'd like? Is it impacting your trust in yourself and those around you? Maybe you feel stuck, insecure, overwhelmed or exhausted? Is re-entering the scene challenging because of late identification/diagnosis (neurodivergent, queer/trans)? Do you want to understand your place in the world? Are you hoping to find understanding, support and increased awareness of who you are, your needs/wants and how to communicate them?

I offer sessions in my cozy office in Nelson, BC or online from the comfort of your own home.
In my work with my clients I create a space that is nonjudgmental, caring, compassionate, honest, and ethical. I work to meet clients where they are at, at the pace of their nervous system, and it's capacity to grow and integrate new information. I help my clients grow and connect with their own inner healer. It is said, “If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.” I work to understand each person's history, background, heart, goals, and visions for their life and then provide guidance to move in that direction in an empowered way.

If you are struggling with a particular issue, feeling lost in a relationship; intimate or professional, worrying and lacking the motivation to put ideas/thoughts into action, or just generally feeling stuck, I'm glad you are here. Life is complex and doesn't come with clear and definitive guidelines. No wonder we can feel overwhelmed! Sometimes it can just feel like it too much to manage alone. Working in a therapeutic relationship where you are the focus can help you find ways to learn, grow, and heal.

At the core of who we are, we long for connection—connection through the beauty of life, its difficult truths, and all the emotions it brings: joy, grief, fear, confusion, love... In our therapeutic relationship, I hope to connect with you in a way that allows you to shed the masks we all wear. I want to understand who you truly are, how you truly feel, and what you seek from this time—both our time together and in the broader scope of your life. Together, we’ll confront the blind spots and challenges life presents, with the goal of deepening your connection to others, and most importantly, to yourself.

Therapy that fits your life: in-person in Nelson, BC or online across Canada.
Hey, I’m Heather! I’m a clinical counsellor based in Nelson, BC, and the heart behind The Lounge Room. I’ve got a BA in Psychology from UVic and a Master of Counselling from CityU, plus a handful of random letters that look a lot like alphabet soup after my name (MC, CCC, and soon RCC). I started The Lounge Room because I wanted therapy to feel a little less clinical and a lot more human. My approach is grounded, collaborative, and sprinkled with humour - the kind that comes from knowing life is just... a lot sometimes.

Is online therapy as effective as in-person?

Numerous studies suggest that online therapy can be as effective as in-person therapy. However, further research is needed to determine if online therapy provides the same benefits across all client populations. Individuals with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, or those who may benefit from in-person check-ins, like those with eating disorders, may not experience the same level of benefit from online therapy. Nonetheless, the success of online therapy, much like in-person therapy, often hinges on the quality of the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the client rather than the specific modality of therapy used.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of therapy conducted online?

One of the main advantages of online therapy is its convenience for both clients and therapists. It also allows clients who require specialised therapy to access a wider range of professionals than they could with only in-person sessions. Additionally, online therapy may be a more affordable option in some cases and often offers the same insurance benefits as in-person therapy. However, online therapy may not be suitable for everyone, especially those who value face-to-face interaction with a therapist. Therapists may find it more challenging to assess clients accurately in an online setting due to reduced nonverbal cues on camera. There is also the increased risk that disruptions caused by external factors, such as technology malfunctions, can hinder the therapy session. For these reasons, many therapists offer a "hybrid" therapeutic approach, alternating between seeing clients in-person and online.

Is online therapy suitable for children and adolescents?

Just like with adults, the accessibility and convenience of online therapy can greatly benefit children and adolescents. In fact, children and adolescents may be more accustomed to navigating online platforms than older adults, making online sessions feel more natural for them. Teens might also be interested in using additional online tools, such as therapist-recommended apps, as an adjunct to online therapy sessions. Apps for developing CBT skills, practicing mindfulness exercises, or tracking thoughts and moods can be helpful for teens receiving therapy. However, it's important to note that not all therapeutic modalities are well-suited to online therapy, especially those used with younger children. For example, play therapy, which helps younger children express their emotions, often requires in-person sessions to be fully effective.

Can I receive prescriptions and medication management with online therapy?

The ability for psychiatrists to prescribe medications through online therapy varies based on the medication and the states where the medical professional and client are located. While many prescribing regulations were relaxed during the COVID-19 pandemic, some states still enforce rules, especially concerning controlled substances, which may mandate an in-person visit before prescribing. Generally, however, medical professionals can prescribe non-controlled substances through online therapy sessions just as they do during in-person sessions.
