I believe counselling can be a space where we can get to know our authentic selves, where all parts of us can be explored and we can start to resist the boxes that may be confining us. I view counselling as a collaborative process and recognize each person’s natural ability to gravitate toward change at their own pace. I believe that the genuine connection of a counselling relationship in a safe and inclusive environment is at the root of healing.

Life can be challenging, stretching us beyond what we believe we are capable of sustaining. We can often feel stuck, not knowing how to break free from unhelpful patterns, or not able to cope with the intensity of the feelings we are experiencing. The good news is that you don’t have to do it alone. I offer a safe place to land and support for whatever you are going through. Together, through reflection and exploration, we can bring compassionate awareness and a deepening understanding to your experience and work together to create the changes you are seeking.

I believe that all human beings have a remarkable ability to grow and change. Some clients come to me with a great deal of depression or hopelessness about their lives without the insight as to how they can be helped. I use a strengths-based approach as I listen to their stories to find the hope, possibilities, and resiliencies that coexist alongside suffering and insecurities. Therapies are evidenced-based and trauma informed and approach clients from a spiritual and cultural lens.

There are times in our lives when we just need someone there. Someone who we know gets us and cares as much as we do. At times it's when it's most difficult to reach out, we feel vulnerable and perhaps alone. We can be dealing with old resurfacing trauma, or behaviors we don't understand why they are happening. Perhaps we have anxiety, depression or grief has come knocked at our door. Relationships are challenging us. We want to be met and have a sense of being seen for who and what we are. We long to be understood or simply to find new ways of being and wonder how to get there. We long for change and the knowing that we are OK.

If you're on a healing journey, you've likely tried several types of therapy. My clients often sense there is something holding them back, and are curious to explore new techniques that might work for them. For some, somatic work is the solution they've been looking for. We work together to build a sense of safety and connection in the body. Somatic work supports your nervous system and builds access to your own innate resources and wisdom. You might be someone who wants to find your voice, create healthy boundaries, befriend anxiety, and access a deeper connection with yourself.

How can I find a therapist in Nelson?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or province where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

How much does therapy cost?

Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $3200 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
