Hi, I'm Nicole, a counsellor serving the Parksville/Nanaimo area. I specialize in anxiety, depression, trauma, and family systems work. Though my clients range from kids to adults, I have a strong soft spot for working with youth and young adults. They often show up on the first day tense and anxious about trying therapy, and leave stating they are so relieved and excited to come back. Teens these days have to navigate a world of unique pressures and challenges (particularly with the online world) that previous generations never had to face. I love walking through this stage of their journey with them.

I work with individuals, couples, and families who are committed to authentic and deep change in their lives and relationships. Some seek support in dealing with life's challenges such as life transitions, grief and loss, chronic pain and illness, etc. Others, are dealing with depression, anxiety, eating disorders, or trauma. I also work with healthcare providers who are navigating workplace challenges and stress. In addition, I work with leaders who seek a holistic, relational neuroscience-based approach to their development and who wish to understand organizations from a complex systems perspective.

Are you having trouble sleeping? Feeling anxious and experiencing pained body & sadness that wont go away? Trauma can lead one's body to develop a sense of hyper-vigilance. This is when one becomes continually tensed, as though the body is “braced” awaiting threats to happen. Ongoing patterns of stress & tension can manifest as chronic pain/fatigue, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, PTSD-anxiety, insomnia, sexual and/or immune system dysfunctions. The intention of Somatic Therapy is to enhance your capacity to self heal by freeing the body, breath & energy flow through the practice of self awareness and self-compassion.

Although I am also a couples counsellor, I work primarily with those who have experienced trauma. Trauma is the experience of being emotionally and psychologically overwhelmed and overcome for weeks, months, or years by adverse childhood experiences and adult traumatic events. My focus is always on the present and a hopeful future - how can those debilitated by anxiety, shame, poor self-worth, child sexual abuse, c-PTSD and PTSD, and dissociative disorders including Dissociative Identity Disorder, become healthy enough to meet their own needs for income, housing, affirming relationships, and wellness - physical, emotional AND mental

Feeling stuck and disconnected from ourselves and our loved ones is a common human experience in this day in age. Yet, all of us have a deep longing to feel empowered and engaged, to love and be loved, and to experience a deep and meaningful life. Relationships are the core of our fulfillment, and they all start with our relationship to ourselves. However struggles are manifesting, uncovering the layers of our defenses and opening to our inner world and true selves is a courageous journey worth travelling.

If you’re reaching out, something significant may have happened — or something in your life may feel stuck and unresolved. You might be navigating a major life change, loss, abuse, complex childhood wounds, or patterns that leave you discouraged and questioning yourself. Some traumas are clear and defining; others linger quietly beneath the surface for years. I help clients shift from asking, “What’s wrong with me?” to “What happened to me?” — reducing shame and understanding coping patterns as meaningful responses. Our minds and bodies adapt to survive; painful experiences may shape us, but they do not define our worth or identity.

My approach to clients is always strength-based, as I believe that every individual has unique strengths and resiliencies that can serve as a foundation for their personal growth. One of my key professional interests the cultivation of resilience (the ability to bounce back from adversity), and self-efficacy (one's own belief in their capacity to change and achieve goals). I believe that both of these internal resources can be cultivated in any individual through personal exploration and self-reflection. I assist clients in tapping into existing strengths. First Nations Clients that qualify for FNHA funding can attend free.

I see clients in-person and online - am accepting new clients at this time. Life can feel overwhelming at times and all of us can benefit from outside help at some point in our lives. It takes courage to reach out for that help and so welcome to my page. I treat each client differently because we are all different. What is common though in my counselling, is my belief in a collaborative approach. Together we can prioritize issues so that you can become the best version of yourself - authentic and fulfilled. Eg. I have lived experience with ADHD. Not a character flaw, but a form of neurodiversity. Coping strategies can help alot.

I have been working as a counsellor for 29 years and my work focuses on addiction and trauma issues. They often go hand in hand but not always as each person is unique. The focus of my counselling work is very respectful as I acknowledge that you know yourself best. Most people seek out counselling because they are stuck in old patterns that they have outgrown yet need help to move forward in a new, more helpful way. I appreciate the courage it takes to reach out and I will work hard to help you make the changes you need.

If you are here looking for support you probably feel stuck. You may wonder why you keep doing things that cause you to suffer or why you can't seem to feel better about yourself or why you know what to do but can't take action. In other words, you may feel pushed around by the painful events in your world and prevented from doing, having or feeling what you want.

Finding the right therapist can feel overwhelming, and you don’t have to go through it alone. I strive to offer a warm, supportive, and nonjudgmental space where you can feel safe being yourself. I work collaboratively with clients and believe therapy should move at a pace that feels right for you. I am neurodiversity-affirming and respect the many ways people think, communicate, and experience the world. I often work with individuals navigating anxiety, stress, burnout, masking, life transitions, and relationship challenges, as well as those seeking a deeper understanding of themselves. I don’t believe therapy is about fixing you.

Do you carry the lingering impact of trauma—whether from a single overwhelming event such as an accident, loss, or medical emergency, or from ongoing patterns like childhood neglect or painful attachment experiences? Trauma can live in both body and mind, showing up as anxiety, nightmares, flashbacks, chronic pain, or disconnection from yourself. Emotional neglect is one of the most invisible yet powerful forms of trauma, often leaving you unsure of your worth or needs. In therapy, we can gently explore these experiences and begin creating a sense of safety, healing, and reconnection.

If you’ve struggled to find someone you can talk to openly, I’m here for the hard conversations. I support people in exploring intimacy, sexuality, and relationships in ways that feel safe, real, and judgment-free. People often come to me when they’re navigating disconnection, relational challenges, or changes in desire, trust, or identity following stress or life transitions. They may be unsure how to talk about intimacy or want to rebuild closeness and self-understanding after a difficult period. Many are seeking a supportive, shame-free space to explore these experiences with honesty and compassion.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.

Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
