I operate from a trauma-informed, humanistic and strength-based approach and have experience supporting children, youth and adults dealing with varying issues including, but not limited to: anxiety, depression, grief, loss, maternal mental health, substance use and life transitions.
At times, we might find ourselves muddling through life feeling overwhelmed, exhausted or stuck. We might be generally unsure of steps to take to move us forward. Pain and discomfort are an unavoidable part of the human experience and, I believe, also serve as room for discovery, change and growth. It is my aim to greet you in a welcoming and intentionally non-judgmental way that allows space to securely explore yourself, your thoughts, emotions and experiences.

I provide counselling for adults and youth 16+, with a focus on substance use and addictions, relationship concerns, trauma and critical incident stress, depression and anxiety, and personal growth.
My passion for counselling came from both personal and professional experience in asking for support and supporting others. I believe connection to others, along with a safe non-judgemental space to be heard can allow us to begin the journey in growth, healing and self exploration. I believe all our emotions, behaviours, and thoughts serve a purpose – even those we perceive as negative- and that by understanding that purpose, we can better understand ourselves and our relationships.

You can't cross the sea merely by standing and staring at the water. -Rabindranath Tagore. Whether you have tried many therapists, or have never been to therapy, I am comfortable working with people who are skeptical about the counselling process. I bring a trauma-informed lens to counselling to help you work through tricky moments from the past and present that we may or may not be entirely aware of. I have a person-centred approach, which means that I work collaboratively with you, at your own pace.

When you notice there is something getting in the way of living their best life, remember that the “obstacle is the way”. This means that the way to the life you want is through this difficulty, which can become an entryway into more of what you want. I am here to help you move through obstacles until they become the way towards your best life. My goal as a therapist is to help people live a more balanced and connected life. I’m in my element as I create a safe, welcoming, and non-judgmental counselling environment, where people can explore the complexities of their lives. I work from a holistic perspective.

Life can be challenging and although we are often able to cope with the difficulties that come our way, there are times when we can become overwhelmed with our thoughts and emotions. An issue may arise that feels too difficult to manage on our own. I provide a safe, supportive, non-judgmental space for you to explore whatever issues have brought you to seek support. I will help you move forward with clarity, confidence, and self-acceptance. It is perfectly normal to reach out for help. We will work together to meet your goals and find solutions that work for you. As a trauma informed therapist, I offer EMDR therapy.

Are you stressed at work and can’t sleep at night? Feeling worried, stuck and overwhelmed? I understand that these experiences can lead to feelings of loss – loss of control, loss of freedom, and loss of passion for your life. You might have been trying different strategies on your own, trying to power through the problem, relying on will power alone. Truth is - it’s not that you need to “work harder”. What you need is someone with the right knowledge and skills to guide you through the process and point you in the right direction. You are in the right place and you have options.

Substance Use Counsellors

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counsellors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
