In therapy, the greatest change happens when youth and their families feel safe and connected. I aim to create a warm, inclusive, and non-judgmental environment to foster a strong and collaborative therapeutic relationship. I practice in evidence-based interventions for children and adolescents struggling with emotional and behavioural concerns. I approach therapy from a cognitive-behavioural framework that is attachment- and trauma-informed. I regularly integrate or adapt to other evidence-based treatments to meet the specific needs of youth and families. I also have expertise in parent training to help parents support their child.

I am not currently accepting new clients directly. However, my student intern is accepting new clients at a reduced rate of $40+GST per session. Do you feel frustrated, sad, lonely or depressed much of the time? Or, do you feel numb and unable to connect with yourself and your emotions? You are not alone. Many people feel overcome by powerful emotions and struggle to manage them on a daily basis; others, have created a system in which they cut themselves off from their feelings and they experience numbness.

As a therapist, I offer you a professional relationship that is deeply accepting and non-judgemental, but also objective and truthful. The issues that bring you to therapy likely started in the context of relationship, and so need to be healed in relationship. My expertise is in creating a specific type of relationship with you, that catalyzes healing and change. In this process you will discover your capacity to trust again, to have connected, satisfying relationships, to stabilize emotionally and accept yourself again. Compulsions and addictions will become unnecessary, and you will develop a new sense of peace and joy in life.

I look forward to helping clients who are lacking feeling much or any happiness and joy and feel instead numb, worried and unable to change this, clients with complicated childhoods that have left them not understanding how to change the impacts and how they now live as an adult. Also, clients who want to understand themselves more so they can choose differently, are ready for a change, to listen to their own needs and want to understand how to move forward to experience a different life. In many ways this process is like going back and relearning yourself, the whys and ways you became you and who are meant to be.

When you notice there is something getting in the way of living their best life, remember that the “obstacle is the way”. This means that the way to the life you want is through this difficulty, which can become an entryway into more of what you want. I am here to help you move through obstacles until they become the way towards your best life. My goal as a therapist is to help people live a more balanced and connected life. I’m in my element as I create a safe, welcoming, and non-judgmental counselling environment, where people can explore the complexities of their lives. I work from a holistic perspective.

How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.
Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.
Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.
What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
