I provide counselling for individuals, couples and children who are working through trauma, family cycles of enmeshed conflict, grief and neurodiversity.
The road to a joy filled life can sometimes take detours. After all, isn't that what we all want? A life honoring ourselves and living it to the fullest? Often those detours send us to bumpy roads that have not been well cared for and they can come without us having much say in it. Trauma and conflict can be the cause of those detours which, left unaddressed, can wreak havoc on the rest of our lives. No one wants to be asked to relive trauma and the good news is that you don't have to! I am trained in techniques that help the body and mind process these wounds without the pain of retelling the story.

Everyone experiences situations in their lives when things do not work out as planned or desired. You may be having a difficult time in moving forward without the time, tools and support to do so in a positive way. Our emotional health is equally, if not more, important than our physical and mental health. When we are faced with trauma, our emotional health takes a toll and affects our ability to manage and demonstrate the emotions that arise from what we have experienced. When individuals and family members address and work on issues, which have been buried for years, they are able to achieve a sense of peace, balance and comfort.

My work is further informed by additional training I have taken: San'yas Indigenous Cultural Safety, Trauma & Resiliency Informed Practice, Mindful Self-Compassion, DBT, Emotion Focused Family Therapy, & CBT.
Although I am trained as a generalist and I have experience working with all genders, backgrounds, and concerns, I have a developing specialization working with acute and developmental trauma. I have completed specialized training in Observed and Experiential Integration (OEI Level 2), a body-based trauma-processing therapy, in order to help clients re-process painful experiences from their past and lead more connected lives. I also have specialization working with men, specifically, and helping them navigate their emotions, relationships, unwanted behaviours, and experiences with masculinity.

What brings me the most joy is supporting families, especially parents, to learn new ways of interacting and engaging with their children and each other to create more positive family dynamics and happy home lives.
Life never seems to follow the map we drew out exactly how we would like. Despite the plans we create, human nature is to engage in relationships, which are almost always unpredictable and can cause conflict and challenges. My goal is to help support you while you process, navigate, and explore the unexpected in life in a safe space. My approach to counselling is to create a warm, understanding, client-centred environment to support you with compassion, and empathy, and view your situation holistically.

With over 7 years of experience supporting individuals and families, I offer a holistic, trauma-informed approach, where I incorporate family theories, and attachment theories, along with DBT, ACT, EMDR, Neurofeedback, and mindfulness techniques.
Seeking help is not always easy. Not knowing what to say, worrying about being a burden, fear of being judged or rejected…the list is endless. It takes a lot of courage to ask for help because we will have to put ourselves in a vulnerable place, where we surrender control. I believe vulnerability is the key to any close relationship. And here you are, bravely taking the first step towards the journey of healing and reconnection. Congratulations! Now that you have chosen to reflect on the past and move forward, I hope to have the honour of providing a safe and welcoming space for you to let the healing begin.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
