In my practice, EMDR therapy has helped many clients of all ages move beyond stress, anxiety, grief, or depression towards greater confidence, self-esteem, authenticity, and passion.
Often my clients are wanting to explore a personal issue/problem/feeling that won't go away and is starting to affect almost every part of their life. Advice from friends or family isn't helping and nothing else they have tried has worked. They believe there must be a better way to be but somehow they are just stuck. I can help you tackle your issues, get unstuck, and find that better place. Both personally and professionally, I can attest to the power of awareness as a key factor in facilitating a desired change; We can’t find the truth listening to our own voice’s echo. We can find ourselves only in someone’s mirror”(Rumi, n.d)

I am not currently accepting new clients directly. However, my student intern is accepting new clients at a reduced rate of $40+GST per session. Do you feel frustrated, sad, lonely or depressed much of the time? Or, do you feel numb and unable to connect with yourself and your emotions? You are not alone. Many people feel overcome by powerful emotions and struggle to manage them on a daily basis; others, have created a system in which they cut themselves off from their feelings and they experience numbness.

Are life circumstances causing you to feel stuck and exhausted? Are you struggling to live your best life? We can often find ourselves trapped in negative situations and thinking patterns, which lead to exhaustion, burnout, depression , and even suicidal ideation. This is especially true in times of life transitions, such as school, new relationships, separation, parenthood, career, etc. My passion for therapy and mental wellness emerges from own past experiences, that were greatly helped by personal counselling and self-care.

I have been employed as a clinical counselor since 2006, providing counseling on various issues including addictions, depression , anxiety, ADHD, self-esteem, trauma, child & youth mental health, anger management, crime victim assistance, family issues, couple counseling, parenting, and so on.
My foundation of therapy is a biopsychosocial-spiritual model, viewing human beings as whole persons of four aspects: physical, psychological, social, and spiritual. Therefore, I am able to see the whole picture on how a brain injury, physical illness, physical trauma, or substance abuse affects human emotions, cognition, behavior, and spirituality, or vice versa. My approach utilizes Cognitive Rehabilitation therapy (CRT), Rogerian therapy, Cognitive Behavioral therapy (CBT), and Narrative therapy in order to help my clients toward problem solving and having a new hope for a new life.

I have been described by clients as being vibrant and energetic and the way I conduct therapy is an action-orientated process. When conducting therapy with my couples I create a positive, comfortable, and humor-filled, environment which is most conducive to learning. It is so gratifying to see couples become excited about their relationships, and to know that I had a part in influencing their relationship in a positive way. I work with couples on many topics, from communication to infidelity. I also enjoy individual therapy working on issues around anxiety, depression , to life transitions.

I have experience working with clients struggling from anxiety, depression , adhd, grief, and relationship issues.
The challenges and negative experiences we go through can sometimes leave a negative residue on us and prevent us from living freely. For us to heal from the experiences and struggles we face we must allow ourselves to process our thoughts and emotions so we can truly move past them. I support clients who feel stuck, anxious, and unable to enjoy their present lives.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
