Through a client centred, holistic, trauma-informed and
attachment-based
perspective, I integrate modalities to personalize therapy for each client.
No issue is too small or too big for counselling! Maybe you are dealing with past or present circumstances that have left you struggling to cope with your emotions, feeling anxious, stressed, or depressed. Perhaps you need help navigating big or small transitions or events in your life; these may be deeply painful or even wonderful, yet anxiety provoking. Struggling with pregnancy/postpartum issues? Maybe you want to develop mind+body health, self-compassion and rediscover your true self. If you're ready to feel heard and supported and you're willing to engage in the counselling process with courage and openness, therapy can help.

My work is person-centred and holistic, grounded in an
attachment-based
framework supported by various therapeutic modalities such as experiential, narrative, internal family systems, CBT, and mindfulness.
When it comes to healing and/or pushing through challenges in life, it is normal wish for someone to walk alongside you. My approach is guided by the understanding that we, as people, are a walking mosaic of our lived experiences as well as the experiences we did not receive. Whether your area of concern be surrounding mental health challenges, exploring the many parts of your identity that make you who you are, processing traumas, religious deconstruction, or learning new personal skills, I will join you on your journey towards clarity, understanding, and moving forward.

Engaging from a relationally-centered,
attachment-based
lens of care, I consider it a privilege to walk alongside individual and couples clients.
Our life stories are unique and layered. Even so, common threads can be found within our narratives: threads of pain, stuckness, and disconnection, but also ones of resilience, courage, and beauty.

I use a variety of therapeutic orientations in my work including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT),
Attachment-based
work, and Person-Centered Therapy.
My name is Janel Derrick and I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC #12852) with a Masters in Counselling Psychology. I’ve been working in the field of psychology in one form or another for over 20 years. Initially I started as frontline support working with children on the autism spectrum from which I grew into a Behavioural Consultant working with this same population. Now, and for the past several years, I have added the role of clinical counsellor working with individuals, couples, groups, and families who are navigating mental health challenges of many kinds.

I work from an
attachment-based
perspective, helping you to understand when and how these problems began.
Are you and your partner stuck in a cycle of conflict that feels impossible to get out of? Does one of you withdraw or shut down while the other just wants to talk things out? If it feels like you are stuck in a rut and having the same arguments over and over again, counselling can help. Problems in our relationships often stem from problems within ourselves. You may be feeling anxious, lonely or depressed and this is affecting your confidence and how you relate to your partner, friends and family.

I operate from an
attachment-based
, emotion-focused, and trauma-informed framework.
Being human is beautifully weird, and painfully difficult. As a therapist, I am less interested in providing pat answers about this human experience, and more interested in creating shame-free spaces where we can lean into its mysteries and learn from it. I believe that therapy can be a transformational experience where we experience change as we are held and seen by another, and it is my great privilege to walk with those who are willing to share their stories with me.

I practice from a relational,
attachment-based
perspective and intentionally incorporate therapeutic approaches that support my clients as they navigate life’s challenges and work towards achieving their goals.
There is nothing more beautiful to me than the rawness of the human spirit. No matter who we are, where we are from or where we go next, we carry narratives about ourselves that impact our experiences & the way we show up in the world. Humans are social beings, which means that the condition of our relationships directly influences our quality of life & overall wellness. However, many of us were never taught the importance of nurturing a strong and healthy relationship with the self, first. Without this relationship, we may be left wondering who we are, what matters most, and how to let go of what no longer serves us.

Everyone experiences situations in their lives when things do not work out as planned or desired. You may be having a difficult time in moving forward without the time, tools and support to do so in a positive way. Our emotional health is equally, if not more, important than our physical and mental health. When we are faced with trauma, our emotional health takes a toll and affects our ability to manage and demonstrate the emotions that arise from what we have experienced. When individuals and family members address and work on issues, which have been buried for years, they are able to achieve a sense of peace, balance and comfort.

Living in and relating to our bodies in a healthy, comfortable way can be especially difficult in this day and age, given the countless messages and pressures we experience. How we feel living in our body may effect a wide range of areas in our life, including mood, self-esteem, behaviours, and relationships with others. My approach to counselling focuses on helping my clients understand and improve the way they relate to their emotions, to their thoughts, to their body, to their self, and to others.

My foundation of therapy is a biopsychosocial-spiritual model, viewing human beings as whole persons of four aspects: physical, psychological, social, and spiritual. Therefore, I am able to see the whole picture on how a brain injury, physical illness, physical trauma, or substance abuse affects human emotions, cognition, behavior, and spirituality, or vice versa. My approach utilizes Cognitive Rehabilitation therapy (CRT), Rogerian therapy, Cognitive Behavioral therapy (CBT), and Narrative therapy in order to help my clients toward problem solving and having a new hope for a new life.

Hello! Thank you taking time to view my page. It can be challenging to reach out for support so I truly commend you in taking this very courageous first step. One of the most important aspects in finding a counsellor is to find one who can make you feel welcome, and safe. It is my goal in therapy to create a warm and inviting atmosphere where you can feel comfortable in just being yourself, knowing that you are accepted, no matter what your circumstances may be. I am always humbled by the insight that my clients bring to our sessions. No one client is the same and my treatment strategy is reflective of this uniqueness.

I am not currently accepting new clients directly. However, my student intern is accepting new clients at a reduced rate of $40+GST per session. Do you feel frustrated, sad, lonely or depressed much of the time? Or, do you feel numb and unable to connect with yourself and your emotions? You are not alone. Many people feel overcome by powerful emotions and struggle to manage them on a daily basis; others, have created a system in which they cut themselves off from their feelings and they experience numbness.

Attachment-based Counsellors
Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.
What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.
How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.
Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
