Jennifer approaches therapy from a trauma-informed perspective because problems often stem from early experiences that influence present emotions, behaviours, and life quality. Anxiety, depression, relational issues, eating disorders, and emotional struggles are examples of trauma that may be rooted in our history. Trauma may include recent accidents, first-responder incidents, or recipients or witnesses of violent acts. Other times, trauma may accumulate over time because of negative information we endured from caregivers, intimate partners or others in our environment.

Hi there! If you find yourself struggling with stress, anxiety, depression, or relationship issues, you don’t need to go through it alone. Taking the first step and reaching out for support takes courage, and I honour that by demonstrating gentleness and curiosity within the therapeutic space.

Are you seeking relief from pain? Past and current issues like abandonment, trauma, and stress wreak havoc on our body’s equilibrium - our nervous system state. This can lead to issues like depression, self loathing, anger, anxiety, and chronic health issues. These painful issues can cause disruptions in our relationships, leading to even more pain and disconnect. Using proven, effective approaches to regulate our nervous system, we can regain our balance, have greater capacity to create new ways of being in relationship - both with self, and other - so that we can make positive, meaningful, and lasting changes in our lives.

I offer virtual therapy services for adults. I treat a broad range of conditions, but I have a special interest in working on anxiety, depression, perfectionism, stress and overwhelm, life transitions, coping skills, self-esteem/self-acceptance, body image, eating disorders, and healthy behaviours. At this time, I am not accepting referrals for the treatment of PTSD, OCD, personality disorders, or for those needing intensive treatment (e.g., at high risk for hospitalization), as I do not have the availability to offer emergency support.

How does cognitive processing therapy work?
A CPT therapist helps a client evaluate their thoughts about the trauma they experienced, focusing on maladaptive or self-blaming thoughts that can exacerbate symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, or depression. The therapist will work with a client to help them learn to challenge such thoughts and consider different perspectives. The therapist is also likely to ask a client to work on these techniques at home between meetings, such as writing an account of their trauma that can be read aloud during a future session.

What is cognitive processing therapy for PTSD?
Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) is a form of cognitive-behavioural therapy primarily used in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to treat individuals who experienced abuse or violence, who survived natural disasters, who were first responders to such incidents, or who otherwise experienced trauma.

How long does cognitive processing therapy last?
CPT is a short-term therapy. Whether conducted one-on-one or in a group, a complete set of CPT sessions typically includes 12 weekly sessions, along with tasks for clients to complete at home, although this can vary depending on a client’s needs or a therapist’s particular treatment plan. Sessions typically last 60 or 90 minutes.

How effective is cognitive processing therapy?
A large body of research supports the use of CPT to treat people experiencing PTSD, finding it to be effective among different age groups, either in one-on-one therapy sessions or in a group therapy environment. Research suggests that although the initial sessions may be difficult, clients tend to begin to feel positive progress after the first few sessions, and that the benefits tend to last well after the therapy ends.
