My ideal client has often dug themselves into a hole into which they can not get out of on their own. The issues will be related to a difficult relationship of some description, partner, family, community, finance, environment, financial, and certainly themselves. It is likely that their goals are uncertain and that they feel lost. Very often, my ideal client does not know what they want, but can with certainty say what they don't want.

When people talk about the challenges they’re facing, I often find myself saying: “There’s counselling for that.” Because there is! For more than 30 years, I’ve worked in psychology and mental health, supporting individuals and couples through trauma, relationship struggles, anxiety, sexual concerns, burnout, and major life transitions. Over time, I’ve come to believe something deeply: Most of us are incredibly resilient. But sometimes we shouldn’t have to do it alone. Here on Hornby Island, and working with clients throughout British Columbia, I offer counselling that is grounded, experienced, and deeply relational.

My ideal clients are individuals and families impacted by addiction who are feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure what to do next. Many have spent years trying to help, fix, control, or protect someone they love and are ready for a different approach. I help clients understand the patterns that keep families stuck, develop healthier boundaries, regulate their nervous systems, and reconnect with their own lives. Together, we shift the focus from changing someone else to understanding what is within their own control—creating meaningful, sustainable change for the whole family.

Drug & Alcohol Counsellor, CSAC

We tailor each intervention to suit the needs of each individual.
Specifically designed to help a loved one, whether a friend, colleague or a family member, an intervention is a process that sheds light on the destructive behaviours being exhibited by an individual. It also addresses the effect those behaviours are having on everyone in their life. The concept is based upon non-violent communication.

Intervention Counsellors
How does an intervention work?
An intervention is a planned, structured meeting in which a person’s family or friends voice concerns about the person’s behaviour and its consequences; the goal is for the person to accept treatment. In this meeting, the person’s loved ones (often with the guidance of a trained interventionist) share how the person’s behaviour has harmed them and the consequences if the person refuses treatment. They collectively ask the person to accept a proposed treatment plan.

How effective are interventions?
There isn’t extensive research on the efficacy of interventions, in part because success is difficult to measure. Individuals often enter addiction treatment after an intervention, for example, but treatment itself may not work, especially if the person only begins due to external pressure from others rather than due to internal motivation to change. However, if all other attempts at helping someone have failed, an intervention may be worth exploring.

What are the limitations of interventions?
While a friend or family member’s intentions are in the right place in wanting to help a loved one through an intervention, there are significant limitations to the approach. The surprising nature of the event can make the person feel ambushed or judged. They may feel embarrassed or ashamed as a result, and relationships may be strained or broken. This can make it difficult for the individual to be receptive to the concerns of their loved ones and the interventionist.

Are there alternatives to interventions?
Rather than confronting a loved one through an intervention, an effective and less pressured approach is to create space for a caring, open, one-on-one conversation. This works best if the loved one asks open-ended questions, listens attentively to the answers, and frames their observations and statements with concern rather than judgment. More than one conversation may be needed, but change can take root over time.
