Accepting Virtual Clients in BC (Offers CBT & EMDR) - My clinical framework is depth and attachment based, which means in order to understand our current challenges we must explore the root source. I work with individuals who are curious and motivated, and align with the understanding that we are a product of our environment and experiences, as well as our upbringing and family system. I encourage a holistic approach, which means I believe wellness is best achieved through living a well balanced life that includes mental, emotional, physical, spiritual, and social health.

My work as a therapist is informed by human resilience and our intrinsic drive to heal. I believe that we are oriented towards growth, and the integration of trauma, life experience and pain is the doorway to actualization. I see therapy as a tool for becoming, it is process of unfolding, discovering and meeting yourself. This work can be challenging: struggle is part of the human experience, however, so is transformation, connection, and change. I work closely with those who have experienced trauma, disordered eating and body image issues, and anxiety and depression.

As a Registered Clinical Counsellor with an M.D, I offer my clients more than just remarkable qualifications and a warm, welcoming environment - I provide effective strategies and perceptive insights developed from over 15 years of experience. It is the journey from hopelessness to hope, and then finally to the joy of a changed reality that makes my job truly rewarding. As a therapist, I don't guarantee an easy fix to the challenges you face, but I can promise it will be easier if we share the load and it carry it towards a solution together.

Are you ready to heal? Physical pain, anxiety and depression associated with trauma/overwhelming experiences can be compounded by frustration and hopelessness when telling our story doesn't bring relief. After trauma, we can remain seemingly stable for many years until the body's management strategies begin to falter, as the nervous system reaches it's capacity to cope. Trauma has often been misunderstood by doctors and therapists alike, overlooked or dismissed as a key factor in our overall health. Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a highly specialized therapy that effectively treats trauma, supporting healing where the rupture has occurred - in the nervous system.

Sometimes, despite all our efforts, we find ourselves on a path we did not intend to be on – what once worked is no longer working, or so much has happened that we cannot find our bearings. I find that clients are looking for change - they want to process past and present struggles as well as shift into new patterns of relating to themselves and to others. My approach is client-centered, trauma informed, strengths based, emotion focused and experiential. I enjoy working with older adults, adults, intermediate and high school aged children, and parents of children (any age).

Does it feel like all you and your partner seem to do lately is argue, feel impatient with one another and seem to misunderstand what each of you is trying to communicate? Do you look at your partner, feel disconnected and lonely and wonder "what happened to us?" Or perhaps you wake up in the morning with dread and no energy at the thought of getting up and facing the day, or feel anxious and overwhelmed when facing daily tasks that seem simple to everyone else? Or perhaps it's nothing specific, but you have a nagging feeling that your current joy is being affected by your past experiences?

Attachment-based Counsellors

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
