I work from a foundation of mindfulness, CBT , DBT, and ART (Accelerated Resolution Therapy).
My focus is to create a safe, judgment-free space where you feel you can be open about what you're experiencing and work through any challenges you have been enduring. You may feel uncertain about how to move forward or as though you are lacking the tools or insight you need to navigate your current situation. In our time together, it is essential that you feel not only heard and understood, but that you have gained the insight and tools necessary to uncover helpful solutions. Through this process, you will feel more confident in yourself and your capacity to manage whatever stressors come your way.

My experience working in Social Work and Counselling has afforded me the opportunity to work with diverse and vulnerable clients in clinical settings, as part of an interdisciplinary team, and individually in grassroots environments. This combination of experience has shaped the counsellor I am, which is one that works from a trauma-informed person-centered approach and incorporates a mixture of mainstream counselling approaches such as trauma treatment, cognitive -behavioural therapy, solution- focused therapy, strengths-based counselling, mindfulness, and somatic psychotherapy).

Trained in solution-focused and cognitive -behavioural therapy.
'Challenge brings change". Easy to say, yet difficult to do. Victor Frankl wrote, "when we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves", (Man's Search for Meaning, 1946). When we find ourselves in difficult situations, we have choice - remain in the pain, or seek support to move through. I know life's greatest challenges have brought incredible change to my life, but it hasn't been easy. You don't need to face challenge and change alone.

Clients come to counselling with an issue that is causing them to feel stuck. In our session, we will work together to discover the internal impacts of the issues or story that has brought you to counselling. We will resolve how your past experiences are impacting you in the present, transform your relationship with parts of yourself that are out of balance and discover ways to meet any needs in your life that are currently unmet. I focus on health and possibilities and I hold the hope that change is always possible.

Each one of us will struggle at some point in our lives, but these are particularly challenging times for many us. With lockdown, stress, anxiety, and depression are increasing, as are unhelpful coping strategies. Relationships are being tested. Many of my clients are seeking to feel calm and experience more emotional balance. Others are deciding that now is a good time to start the healing process from a past traumatic experience. Another common goal for clients is to start living in line with their values, or what they truly want in life.

Life comes with many stressors like how to be a good parent or partner and manage heavy work obligations at the same time. You might feel overwhelmed, doubt yourself and don’t always feel understood or supported by people in the way you need. These challenges can impact many parts of life including your physical and mental health, relationships, work performance and ability to be present and generally enjoy life. You feel stuck and alone at times and want a new perspective on your life and choices, because doing it on your own causes anxiety or keeps you up at night. You want skills that help you calm and focus. You want change.

How do you choose a counsellor when there are so many choices ? I say go with your gut! I come from a perspective that building a trusting realtionship with my clients is the most effective way to aid that person in working through their stuggles, gain new perspectives, discover strengths they already have, and develop new tools to address the issues they came to a counsellor for.

I believe in the mind-body connection, and how distress impacts how we show up in our lives & relationships. I trust clients instinctively know what to do to feel better, and that I spark their insight by allowing someone to first feel heard and understood. Clients and I often explore how to take the charge out of distressing emotions and/or experiences that underlie their presenting concerns (e.g., anxiety, depression, work/life/relationship stressors etc).

Much of life is figuring out who we are, where we are going, and how to navigate the challenges and obstacles that get in the way. Jeremy's training and interests have an integrative and person-centered approach. He uses a foundation in the science of the brain and nervous system to inform how these effect emotion, behaviour, and how we attach and bond to others. This approach, in combination with exploring the importance of your background, beliefs and experiences, is aimed at creating a safe and therapeutic environment for you.

The issues that I deal a lot with are trauma, stress, anxiety, and depression. My ideal client would want to create goals and strategies that can help produce change in their lives. I have found that creating a safe space, where collaboration, openness, mutual trust, and self-awareness can lead to an attitude of change and a willingness to do so.

I believe in a nonjudgmental, compassionate, and philosophical basis to personal counselling that combines evidence-based treatments like cognitive -behavioral therapy and EMDR with traditional sources of wisdom such as Stoicism and mindfulness.
I am interested in helping clients harness their innate resources and discover the deeper meanings, and solutions, to their presented problems. I am offering my services to adults and adolescents who may be experiencing a range of issues including, but not limited to: emotional problems (anger, depression, anxiety, ect.), couples/relationships/communication issues, addictions/habit change, stress/trauma, life-transitions, as well as the search for meaning, identity, and spirituality.

Cognitive Behavioural (CBT) Counsellors

How does cognitive behavioural therapy work?

Cognitive behavioural therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario (catastrophizing) or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioural therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioural therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioural therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
