If you're looking for a counsellor you may be going through a crisis or experience chronic emotional pain, feel anxious and depressed or numb and shut down. You may be in a destructive cycle of compulsive, out-of-control behaviours - struggling with living in a chronic state of fight, flight, or disconnected freeze. You may be a compulsive people-pleaser, have difficulty setting boundaries, or be overcome with
grief
. And you may, in spite of honest effort, have discovered that anxiety and depression, cravings,
loss
of control, or carrying on despite negative consequences are beyond reason and willpower to overcome.

David Ausher (he/him) is a Registered Therapeutic Counsellor (RTC) 2957 with the Association of Cooperative Counselling Therapists of Canada. I am a therapist who has dedicated my life to assisting individuals with their life struggles. I understand what it is like to feel lost and like your life is in turmoil. Many years ago I set out to better understand who I was and why I felt the way I did. My own personal journey of self-discovery yielded some new truths for me: I am not alone. The more I understand about myself, the more alive I feel.

Addiction, eating disorder, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, phobia, and insomnia etc. are most often symptoms, but not the root of the problem. Very often, through childhood and adulthood, many traumatic experiences (such as bullying and abuse) left us with psychological injuries. And we use various above-listed symptoms to deal with experiences that made us feel sad or scared, even for short-term. The real healing/solution is, therefore, to clean the injuries, and develop new coping skills. This approach also applies to unexpected traumatic life experiences, such as accidents, natural disasters, illness, and
grief
.

loss

I offer counseling services to individuals, couples and children on Salt Spring Island. My work is personal, compassionate and direct. I stay close to my client’s experience, without judgment, pointing towards opportunities for growth. Life presents us all with challenges and sometimes we need help facing them. We often need a mirror to help us understand how to change outdated behaviors that are just not working or resolve inner conflicts that are keeping us from living a fulfilling life.

Grief Counsellors
How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
