Making meaning of our experiences can be challenging when we are faced with conflicting stories from our external environment and internal dialogue. The confusion can evoke many trauma-responses (search-for-safety-response) as our nervous system tries to self-soothe from what it believes to be safe. I provide space where we can make sense of these experiences together, while offering various evidence-based strategies to bridge that mind-body connection so my clients can build a better relationship with themselves and others.

I'm a genderqueer trans counsellor who works with adults, youth, and families to gently explore difficulties while affirming the ways people are already working towards their own healing. Right now we are dealing with a lot: COVID-19, the ongoing and escalating police violence against Black and Indigenous peoples, as well as the ongoing racism against Asian and South Asian communities and Hispanic and Latin communities. In these times we need to find ways to support each other through the isolation, uncertainty and hardships. I offer several sliding scale options to make counselling as accessible as possible.

Humans tend to function from certain perceptions of the world based on blueprints we've been conditioned by. There is no right or wrong in the life we chose for ourselves, but inherited belief systems and strategies may've kept us feeling connected-enough at earlier times in our lives. I work with people who want to shake out the shame so that they can find more freedom in all aspects of life. I feel fortunate to be working with people in a meaningful way and love to open myself to the hope & resilience of the human spirit. Inner work can help us feel more clear in purpose and even more empowered in sex, love and relationships.

Complex Trauma, PTSD, ADHD, Borderline Personality Disorder & Narcissistic Abuse share a lot in common. Each can feel confusing, scary and hard to face alone. Each is associated with a set of often overlapping signals from your psyche alerting you that something deep inside needs expert care and attention for you to truly heal, feel authentic and whole, and find relief from inner suffering. Expertly listening with in-depth attunement, genuine compassion and skillful curiosity to what's going on beneath the surface inevitably reveals a path forward toward living a life enriched with a greater sense of meaning, fulfillment and ease.

Through my own journey of self-discovery, I was drawn to the field of counselling psychology in 2007. Prior to starting in private practice, I spent a decade working in multidisciplinary teams providing mental health, trauma and addictions services, in both residential and outpatient settings. I work with clients to develop the understanding and tools needed to navigate the crisis they are facing and move forward with their lives in a meaningful and more easeful way. I am skilled at helping people build on their innate strengths and resources and to resolve deeper patterns using somatic and EMDR therapy.

Feminist Counsellors
How does feminist therapy work?
Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.
What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?
Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.
How long does feminist therapy last?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.
Does feminist therapy work?
As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
