David Ausher (he/him) is a Registered Therapeutic Counsellor (RTC) 2957 with the Association of Cooperative Counselling Therapists of Canada. I am a therapist who has dedicated my life to assisting individuals with their life struggles. I understand what it is like to feel lost and like your life is in turmoil. Many years ago I set out to better understand who I was and why I felt the way I did. My own personal journey of self-discovery yielded some new truths for me: I am not alone. The more I understand about myself, the more alive I feel.

Hi! Thank you for choosing to read my practice profile. My goal is to listen openly and with curiosity to what is bringing you to therapy at this time. You might be seeking help in any or all these areas: going through a difficult transition or loss, feeling stuck in a relational pattern that is not working for you, finding you are frequently *hijacked* by your emotions or wanting to pursue personal growth work. Together we will determine where to focus our attention and work.

Clients who seek me out are interested in developing a deeper experience of life. Their journey may be precipitated by depression, anxiety, or relationship difficulties, but they are often interested in more than symptom relief. They are seeking to develop a stronger sense of self, or an optimized experience of life. This may take the form of becoming the most effective they can be in their personal and professional lives, or it can take the form of embarking on, or continuing, a spiritual search for meaning and connection.

I work in an integrative way. What we do and how we approach it will depend on what works best for you and what you need at this time. Some people know exactly what they want to work on. Other people come because something doesn't feel right or they're not functioning as well as they could but they're not sure at first why that is. Others come even though things are going well but they'd like to develop greater awareness or fulfilment in life. We will work together to develop an approach that suits you.

I'm a genderqueer trans counsellor who works with adults, youth, and families to gently explore difficulties while affirming the ways people are already working towards their own healing. Right now we are dealing with a lot: COVID-19, the ongoing and escalating police violence against Black and Indigenous peoples, as well as the ongoing racism against Asian and South Asian communities and Hispanic and Latin communities. In these times we need to find ways to support each other through the isolation, uncertainty and hardships. I offer several sliding scale options to make counselling as accessible as possible.

Heart-Centred Therapies value the wide-angled, heart-centred space of the practitioner and the phenomenon of shared and co-created space, as much as any intervention. In the session space, I witness, reflect, and inquire from a deeply compassionate and wide-angled lens of human experience. I work with what arises most naturally, with a keen eye and ear for what is possible, most needed, and ultimately empowering from that place. As we discover + embrace our own inner 'coding' of language, symbols, meaning and emotion, we find a new engagement with life, become more aware, responsive, and connected from within.

Currently accepting new clients. Welcome and thank you for your time. We are bound to face challenges that can leave us feeling overwhelmed, uneasy, or lost. Meaning, whether we like it not, change is inevitable and how we navigate those changes can be difficult. Or sometimes, different feelings, thoughts, experiences, and behaviours can present themselves without knowing how to fully understand them.

If you're looking for a counsellor you may be going through a crisis or experience chronic emotional pain, feel anxious and depressed or numb and shut down. You may be in a destructive cycle of compulsive, out-of-control behaviours - struggling with living in a chronic state of fight, flight, or disconnected freeze. You may be a compulsive people-pleaser, have difficulty setting boundaries, or be overcome with grief. And you may, in spite of honest effort, have discovered that anxiety and depression, cravings, loss of control, or carrying on despite negative consequences are beyond reason and willpower to overcome.

How can I find a therapist in Duncan?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or province where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

How much does therapy cost?

Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $3200 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
