Feeling overwhelmed by life and dealing with
anxiety
and stress? I inspire clients to find solutions and resources within themselves. Grieving is getting in the way of your daily functioning and you don't see a way out. The thoughts in your head seem to rule, and you feel like walking around in circles and not getting any better. Conflict arises and solutions are not easy to find.

Clients who seek me out are interested in developing a deeper experience of life. Their journey may be precipitated by depression,
anxiety
, or relationship difficulties, but they are often interested in more than symptom relief. They are seeking to develop a stronger sense of self, or an optimized experience of life. This may take the form of becoming the most effective they can be in their personal and professional lives, or it can take the form of embarking on, or continuing, a spiritual search for meaning and connection.

I also specialize in working with trauma and
anxiety
in youth 12 to 24.
I'm a genderqueer trans counsellor who works with adults, youth, and families to gently explore difficulties while affirming the ways people are already working towards their own healing. Right now we are dealing with a lot: COVID-19, the ongoing and escalating police violence against Black and Indigenous peoples, as well as the ongoing racism against Asian and South Asian communities and Hispanic and Latin communities. In these times we need to find ways to support each other through the isolation, uncertainty and hardships. I offer several sliding scale options to make counselling as accessible as possible.

You may be feeling overwhelmed, tired, or like you're stuck in a battle with parts of yourself. The symptoms your experiencing, are actually your psyche's way of communicating that something inside you needs your care & attention, for you to heal & nurture hidden wounds, and become authentically whole again. Listening with subtle attunement, genuine compassion, & curiosity, gently uncovers core wounds, & what you need to heal them. Being with, & moving through the pain uncovers the relief & ease that you're seeking, but, depression,
anxiety
, & trauma can be confusing, scary, & hard to face alone.

We live in a rapidly changing and often unsettled world. Stress,
anxiety
and depression are common reactions to never ending barrage of daily life. Our bodies are adapting to these challenges in the best way they know how. Sometimes it's too much, and we need to ask for help, or support, in initiating change or making sense of our situations.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
