I'm a genderqueer trans counsellor who works with adults , youth, and families to gently explore difficulties while affirming the ways people are already working towards their own healing. Right now we are dealing with a lot: COVID-19, the ongoing and escalating police violence against Black and Indigenous peoples, as well as the ongoing racism against Asian and South Asian communities and Hispanic and Latin communities. In these times we need to find ways to support each other through the isolation, uncertainty and hardships. I offer several sliding scale options to make counselling as accessible as possible.

Creative approaches to therapy are used which help ground the nervous system, allowing healing & peace to begin. When changes in life feel tough to navigate through, it is vital to have a compassionate and non-judgemental listener to help you feel connected, & find your place in the world.

I provide individual counselling for struggling teenagers and adults who are having difficulties coping with the inevitable ups and downs of life. I believe that even the most confident and capable of us can sometimes get stuck in challenging circumstances and unhelpful patterns of thinking, feeling and acting that unwittingly take us away from what matters most. My approach to counselling can help you learn new ways of understanding, relating to and coping with your painful experiences and encourages you to take intentional steps towards a rich and meaningful life.

Although I work with all adults , I work especially well with women who are wanting to be more authentic, present, and alive in their life.
Sometimes in life we can feel stuck in patterns that don’t make sense but that we just can’t seem to change. Do you feel like you're on high alert for signs of danger, feeling anxious? Or do you feel emotionally flat, only half alive? When you feel upset, do you find yourself with your back up, ready to fight? Do you feel like running away, escaping the situation? Do you find yourself frozen and collapsing, not able to act? You know you’re capable of overcoming these patterns, but how do you get there? The fight, flight, & freeze are survival states, hardwired into our nervous system through childhood trauma or overwhelming events.

I support adults and older adults with different types of challenges such as identity formation, family conflict, depression, anxiety, trauma, and substance use.
I believe achieving well-being should be a positive and pleasant experience. Whatever challenges you have, it is never too late to take the first step in achieving your well-being and maintaining it. Humans are one of the most resilient creatures on Earth, because not only do we adapt and integrate, but are capable of creating unique solutions to solve any problem that comes our way. It is this innate creative power that makes us who we are. In our journey to achieve well-being, I look to the development of the whole person; emotions, social skills, spiritual beliefs, community participation, and awareness of the greater world.

How can I find a therapist in Duncan?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or province where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

How much does therapy cost?

Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $3200 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
