Clearly, you're reading my profile because you're considering counseling. Perhaps a few words about my own journey might help. After a 20+ year career in a global company, I felt it was time to do some positive work. I was drawn to this work because I am genuinely interested in people and I derive a great deal of satisfaction from helping people move forward in their lives. Stress, Anxiety, and Depression can derail us from finding enjoyment in our lives. If you're in this situation, perhaps I can help.

How do you choose a counsellor when there are so many choices ? I say go with your gut! I come from a perspective that building a trusting realtionship with my clients is the most effective way to aid that person in working through their stuggles, gain new perspectives, discover strengths they already have, and develop new tools to address the issues they came to a counsellor for.

Clients come to counselling with an issue that is causing them to feel stuck. In our session, we will work together to discover the internal impacts of the issues or story that has brought you to counselling. We will resolve how your past experiences are impacting you in the present, transform your relationship with parts of yourself that are out of balance and discover ways to meet any needs in your life that are currently unmet. My clientele includes men dealing with mid life career challenges, martial stressors, and/or family strife issues. My older clients (and their spouse or partner) often discuss age and health issues. I explore emotional respite especially when clients are caring for a partner with dementia or special needs children. Many clinic based clients are women in mid life and are dealing with issues like stressed marriage/ or negative interactions with their teens and/or pre teen children. I have wide expertise in treatment of Anxiety and Depression as stand alone mood disorders or as collateral to many other problems.

Maybe your teen is getting into trouble and not acting like themselves out of seemingly nowhere, or maybe your child starts bursting into tears, exhibits anger, or maybe they’ve gone through something rough and need some extra support.
Your child is amazing. You just want the best for them. If you're exploring the idea of therapy, it's likely that your child is currently encountering some difficulties. There's nothing more heart-wrenching than witnessing your child face challenges. Sometimes, you can pinpoint the underlying issue, but in other instances, it remains a complete mystery. Art therapists are trained in both art and psychology, and have knowledge about the psychological role of the creative process and the impact of using different art materials and techniques for helping uncover issues, build healthy coping mechanisms, and support healing and growth.

Do you feel stuck, anxious, or like you are living in "survival" mode? Feel like you are crumbling on the inside, trying to hold it all together with work, your family, and/or in your relationship. Maybe you are desiring a change but cannot seem to make it happen. Or you are experiencing a challenging relationship or struggling to regulate difficult emotions such as worry, anger, or sadness. I help adults and youth overcome stress, anxiety, or disconnection so that they can do more of what they love and deepen their relationships with the people that matter the most.

Divine Alchemy (formerly Bliss Mental Health) is at a new location at 518 Lake Street, Suite 203. I believe that all human beings have a remarkable ability to grow and change. Some clients come to me with a great deal of depression or hopelessness about their lives without the insight as to how they can be helped. I use a strengths-based approach as I listen to their stories to find the hope, possibilities, and resiliencies that coexist alongside suffering and insecurities. Therapies are evidenced-based and trauma informed and approach clients from a spiritual and cultural lens.

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
