I support adults and adolescents who are struggling with a range of mental health issues including anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, grief, substance use disorders,
sleep
disorders, compassion fatigue, moral injury, and others. My clients often arrive feeling at the end of their rope - lost, alone, angry, afraid, overwhelmed, thoroughly drained, hopeless, or sometimes just completely stuck. They want their lives to be better, but don’t know how to begin to identify steps to take or how to manage that change. They want help dealing with difficult emotions and they want their lives to make sense.

'Challenge brings change". Easy to say, yet difficult to do. Victor Frankl wrote, "when we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves", (Man's Search for Meaning, 1946). When we find ourselves in difficult situations, we have choice - remain in the pain, or seek support to move through. I know life's greatest challenges have brought incredible change to my life, but it hasn't been easy. You don't need to face challenge and change alone.

Anxiety, stress or trauma are weighing you down and you want tools that help. You put others first and end up feeling exhausted or resentful. You may feel angry or frustrated in relationships but setting and keeping boundaries is hard. You want a safe and supportive space to talk, where you can speak freely and know that it is confidential. You need support outside of family and friends for an unbiased perspective, without judgement. You want to understand how you got here. You need to know that change and a better quality of life are possible but you can't get there on your own. You are ready to learn and grow and want help.

‘Hearts are not the burdens they carry; but the burdens they carry can drive their extremes' (Richard Schwartz, 2018). There are times when we feel truly burdened: exhausted, confused, immobilized, distressed, anxious, in relationship discord or overwhelmed. Seeking help in these times is a profound step. Because as challenging as these experiences can be, our willingness to approach them, and our courage to change, are our openings to growth, expansion, and transformation. I collaborate with you to help you unburden, and to empower your authentic Self to live with more calm, courage, compassion, meaning, and deep connection.

I believe that all human beings have a remarkable ability to grow and change. Some clients come to me with a great deal of depression or hopelessness about their lives without the insight as to how they can be helped. I use a strengths-based approach as I listen to their stories to find the hope, possibilities, and resiliencies that coexist alongside suffering and insecurities. Therapies are evidenced-based and trauma informed and approach clients from a spiritual and cultural lens.

How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.
Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.
Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.
What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
