Although I have training in specific therapy approaches such as EFT for couples, EMDR, DBT, Mindfulness , etc.
Each one of us will struggle at some point in our lives, but these are particularly challenging times for many us. With lockdown, stress, anxiety, and depression are increasing, as are unhelpful coping strategies. Relationships are being tested. Many of my clients are seeking to feel calm and experience more emotional balance. Others are deciding that now is a good time to start the healing process from a past traumatic experience. Another common goal for clients is to start living in line with their values, or what they truly want in life.

My experience working in Social Work and Counselling has afforded me the opportunity to work with diverse and vulnerable clients in clinical settings, as part of an interdisciplinary team, and individually in grassroots environments. This combination of experience has shaped the counsellor I am, which is one that works from a trauma-informed person-centered approach and incorporates a mixture of mainstream counselling approaches such as trauma treatment, cognitive-behavioural therapy, solution- focused therapy, strengths-based counselling, mindfulness , and somatic psychotherapy).

I support adults and adolescents who are struggling with a range of mental health issues including anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, grief, substance use disorders, sleep disorders, compassion fatigue, moral injury, and others. My clients often arrive feeling at the end of their rope - lost, alone, angry, afraid, overwhelmed, thoroughly drained, hopeless, or sometimes just completely stuck. They want their lives to be better, but don’t know how to begin to identify steps to take or how to manage that change. They want help dealing with difficult emotions and they want their lives to make sense.

Do you feel stuck, anxious, or like you are living in "survival" mode? Feel like you are crumbling on the inside, trying to hold it all together with work, your family, and/or in your relationship. Maybe you are desiring a change but cannot seem to make it happen. Or you are experiencing a challenging relationship or struggling to regulate difficult emotions such as worry, anger, or sadness. I help adults and youth overcome stress, anxiety, or disconnection so that they can do more of what they love and deepen their relationships with the people that matter the most.

'Challenge brings change". Easy to say, yet difficult to do. Victor Frankl wrote, "when we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves", (Man's Search for Meaning, 1946). When we find ourselves in difficult situations, we have choice - remain in the pain, or seek support to move through. I know life's greatest challenges have brought incredible change to my life, but it hasn't been easy. You don't need to face challenge and change alone.

We all face difficult times in our lives. If you find that more of your energy is going into managing life’s challenges rather than enjoying life’s beauty, that is when the support of a skilled therapist can help. I love to work with people who are committed to their growth and unfolding, drawing on my experience and training as a therapist and meditation practitioner to help people live richer lives of meaning, joy and purpose. If you feel there is meant to be more to your life, if you feel a call to move beyond stuck patterns to greater freedom, if you are ready to embark on a journey of self-discovery, I am here to help.

I believe in the mind-body connection, and how distress impacts how we show up in our lives & relationships. I trust clients instinctively know what to do to feel better, and that I spark their insight by allowing someone to first feel heard and understood. Clients and I often explore how to take the charge out of distressing emotions and/or experiences that underlie their presenting concerns (e.g., anxiety, depression, work/life/relationship stressors etc).

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Counsellors

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behaviour through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviours and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioural habits.
