I support adults and adolescents who are struggling with a range of mental health issues including anxiety, depression , trauma and PTSD, grief, substance use disorders, sleep disorders, compassion fatigue, moral injury, and others. My clients often arrive feeling at the end of their rope - lost, alone, angry, afraid, overwhelmed, thoroughly drained, hopeless, or sometimes just completely stuck. They want their lives to be better, but don’t know how to begin to identify steps to take or how to manage that change. They want help dealing with difficult emotions and they want their lives to make sense.

I believe in the mind-body connection, and how distress impacts how we show up in our lives & relationships. I trust clients instinctively know what to do to feel better, and that I spark their insight by allowing someone to first feel heard and understood. Clients and I often explore how to take the charge out of distressing emotions and/or experiences that underlie their presenting concerns (e.g., anxiety, depression , work/life/relationship stressors etc).

The issues that I deal a lot with are trauma, stress, anxiety, and depression . My ideal client would want to create goals and strategies that can help produce change in their lives. I have found that creating a safe space, where collaboration, openness, mutual trust, and self-awareness can lead to an attitude of change and a willingness to do so.

Infertility, separation and divorce, single-parenting, adoption, blended families, parent-teen conflict, depression and anxiety, addiction and recovery are all personal challenges that have brought incredible change to my life.
'Challenge brings change". Easy to say, yet difficult to do. Victor Frankl wrote, "when we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves", (Man's Search for Meaning, 1946). When we find ourselves in difficult situations, we have choice - remain in the pain, or seek support to move through. I know life's greatest challenges have brought incredible change to my life, but it hasn't been easy. You don't need to face challenge and change alone.

Areas I have expertise in include depression and anxiety, childhood and adult trauma and PTSD, grief and loss, self-esteem, life transitions, spiritual growth, and substance misuse and addictions.
We all face difficult times in our lives. If you find that more of your energy is going into managing life’s challenges rather than enjoying life’s beauty, that is when the support of a skilled therapist can help. I love to work with people who are committed to their growth and unfolding, drawing on my experience and training as a therapist and meditation practitioner to help people live richer lives of meaning, joy and purpose. If you feel there is meant to be more to your life, if you feel a call to move beyond stuck patterns to greater freedom, if you are ready to embark on a journey of self-discovery, I am here to help.

Each one of us will struggle at some point in our lives, but these are particularly challenging times for many us. With lockdown, stress, anxiety, and depression are increasing, as are unhelpful coping strategies. Relationships are being tested. Many of my clients are seeking to feel calm and experience more emotional balance. Others are deciding that now is a good time to start the healing process from a past traumatic experience. Another common goal for clients is to start living in line with their values, or what they truly want in life.

I have worked with individuals and groups through issues such as interpersonal/family violence, trauma, depression .
My experience working in Social Work and Counselling has afforded me the opportunity to work with diverse and vulnerable clients in clinical settings, as part of an interdisciplinary team, and individually in grassroots environments. This combination of experience has shaped the counsellor I am, which is one that works from a trauma-informed person-centered approach and incorporates a mixture of mainstream counselling approaches such as trauma treatment, cognitive-behavioural therapy, solution- focused therapy, strengths-based counselling, mindfulness, and somatic psychotherapy).

*I am currently accepting new video/telephone clients.* If you have found yourself reading this page, then you have successfully admitted to yourself that you may need some help. That is a very good first step towards feeling better. It is so important to find yourself a ‘good fit’ for this type of work. Much of life is figuring out who we are, where we are going, and how to navigate the challenges and obstacles that get in the way. Jeremy's training and interests have an integrative and person-centered approach. He uses a foundation in the science of the brain and nervous system to inform how these effect emotion, behaviour, and how we attach and bond to others. This approach, in combination with exploring the importance of your background, beliefs and experiences, is aimed at creating a safe and therapeutic environment for you.

As a therapist, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of working through trauma. Trauma can leave deep scars on our psyche and affect how we think, feel, and behave daily. However, by exploring and processing these experiences in a safe and supportive environment, we can begin to heal and move forward with a renewed sense of resilience and purpose. I am passionate about helping individuals navigate the complexities of trauma and its aftermath.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
