I offer insight-based, experiential therapy for clients who want to get to the root of their problems by locating unconscious issues and traumas, and actively working with these in-session in a gentle, effective way. Many of my clients have already tried "analyzing" their way free from unhealthy mental states and behaviours, and have realized they need a deeper strategy. Clients learn how to manage their behaviours and emotions from a wise, self-regulated place. I also work with partners who want to deepen their communication and connection and gain freedom from negative patterns.

We cannot change the events or situations of our past, but we can absolutely be free from being chronically impacted, and compacted by our history. You are entitled to all of your feelings and they are an integral part of healing and living a healthy life. If you are ready to move what you are holding to a new place, I am here to support that process. You can find your voice, unpack your story, be seen and heard, I bring tools and support to make the changes you would like to make, so that you can embrace your life with love and enthusiasm. In my mind, everyone who survived their story and makes it to counselling is a superhero.

I work with individuals who have been through overwhelming and traumatic events - who are struggling with anxiety, panic or depression, where symptoms and triggers feel uncontrollable and unstoppable and those who feel like their past continues to resurface. By supporting your nervous system and working from a somatic approach, together we will process traumatic memories in a safe and controlled way so they are no longer needing to keep you in an activated state.

I support clients managing emotional challenges, BPD traits, depression, OCD, perfectionism, negative internal dialogue, addiction, grief, trauma, and difficult family dynamics. Together we explore a client's history, experience, emotions, and develop better skills for managing challenges. Often old coping strategies are no longer serving the client. Developing relational intimacy with others, and more compassionate communication with self is integral to my work with individuals and families. Together we find solutions for healing and moving forward in healthy ways so clients can align more authenticly with themselves.

We carry our life story within us. Each person has a unique collection of joys and triumphs, pleasures and pain that imprints their biology. These imprints, formed unconsciously, influence our feeling states, our decision making, self-esteem, and the way we see the world. They shape the way our nervous systems respond and adapt to challenges and change. The imprints that hold the most charge are often formed in childhood or in response to trauma, and they have the ability to create mental, emotional, and physical imbalance—to create a state of disregulation. However, we each possess the profound capacity for change.

I would love to meet you and offer you real change and skills to move forward into wholeness and freedom. I believe the best healing involves all parts of us; mind, body, emotions and spirit. In our fast-paced society, opportunities to be deeply heard, respected and affirmed are scarce. I help clients from a position of respect and non-judgemental curiosity, while clarifying core beliefs, values and goals for change. The tools I have to offer are evidence-based and scientifically proven. The lens I use as I sit with clients is that every human being is a person of worth and value and deserves unconditional positive regard.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Counsellors

How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?

Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?

There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?

Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
