If you a teen or a parent of a teen who is struggling, I understand how difficult it can be to navigate through the tumultuous teen years. I help teens explore what is behind their beliefs, thoughts, feelings, and reactions to help them shift behaviour patterns, build their self-esteem and confidence, improve relationships, and find their potential. I also work with parents and a variety of adult clients. I am a client-centered counsellor who offers therapeutic techniques that are best suited to support you in reaching your goals. I am a member of the BCACC and CCPA.

The teen years are a time of exponential growth and development. Despite the energetic expansiveness of this developmental stage, some teens struggle with overwhelming fears, confusion, or anxiety and depression. The stress and pressure of personal circumstances can feel like it is a lot to handle. As caring bystanders, we may witness a youth retreat into themselves and become difficult to reach. What is the answer? Talking with an experienced counsellor can make a difference.

I have been supporting children & youth, and their families for the past 17 years in public education. I facilitate workshops and also do group counselling. I have a strong background in special education, which means I often observe the behaviour(s) of children and youth, collaborate with them and their families, and implement/teach tools for alleviating a child's stress. I have experience as a clinician for Adult Mental Health & Addictions in both inpatient and outpatient care from the hospital. This has benefited early recognition and prevention.

We cannot change the events or situations of our past, but we can absolutely be free from being chronically impacted, and compacted by our history. You are entitled to all of your feelings and they are an integral part of healing and living a healthy life. If you are ready to move what you are holding to a new place, I am here to support that process. You can find your voice, unpack your story, be seen and heard, I bring tools and support to make the changes you would like to make, so that you can embrace your life with love and enthusiasm. In my mind, everyone who survived their story and makes it to counselling is a superhero.

I believe we all have innate resilience and capacity for wellness – sometimes, when we encounter trauma, loss, or stress, we lose touch with those strengths. We may struggle with worry, hopelessness, self-criticism, or feel "stuck." Our relationships may suffer. At these times, we all need and deserve support. I work with each client to build self-compassion, confidence and regulation, gain insight, and grow skills for wellbeing. To me, safe, empathic relationships are the foundation of health and growth. I strive to create a safe space for clients, and attune to the heart of an issue, so that deep, lasting change can occur.

As a former international teacher in Egypt, China and Korea, I bring cultural humility and a deep appreciation for cultural diversity into my counselling practice. Additionally, my learning from Indigenous peoples has contributed to my understanding of a holistic model of health; the interconnectedness, and necessary balance, between physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of one’s self.

Teen Counsellors

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
